Blue Devil Volleyball Looks To Defend Early Season Volleyball Classic

WEST POINT – Following a week off from competition, the 1-0 Wayne High volleyball team will begin a series of eight consecutive road outings over the next week and a half.

WHS will join the host West Point-Beemer along with Tekamah-Herman this evening in Pool D of the 2020 Jean Groth Volleyball Classic. West Point-Beemer will open the night against Tekamah-Herman at 5:30 p.m.; followed by Wayne High vs. Tekamah-Herman and West Point-Beemer at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Last season, Wayne High won a 2-0 match over West Point-Beemer during a home triangular on October 1. The Cadets finished 10-20 a year ago while Tekamah-Herman finished up 3-28 in 2019.

Wayne High is off to a 1-0 start in 2020 thanks to a home sweep last Thursday over Ponca.

Other pool play matches will be held in Pender at 5:30 p.m. with Pender vs. Wakefield; Wakefield vs. Oakland-Craig and Oakland-Craig vs. Pender. Pool play games in Wisner will feature Wisner-Pilger vs. Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur at 5:30 p.m.; followed by BRLD vs. Lutheran High Northeast and Wisner-Pilger vs. LHNE. Matches in North Bend will showcase North Bend Central vs. Archbishop Bergan at 5:30 p.m.; Bergan vs. Guardian Angels Central Catholic and North Bend vs. GACC.

Teams will then look to qualify for the gold, silver and bronze sites. Tourney games will begin at 8:30 a.m. and last through 1:30 p.m. from Wisner-Pilger on Saturday with matches in Pender being played from 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Cost to attend is $5 for adults and $4 for students as no conference or school passes will be allowed. According to a post from the Wayne Community Schools Facebook page, fans heading to West Point for volleyball Thursday, varsity football Friday and junior high football next Tuesday, a mask will be required to be worn at all times during these events.

A year ago, Wayne High won the gold division of the Northeast Nebraska Volleyball Classic in Pender and Wisner-Pilger. WHS swept Oakland-Craig and Pender in pool play before winning 2-0 sets over Lutheran High Northeast, Archbishop Bergan and the host Wisner-Pilger. The Blue Devils won 10 straight to open their 2019 season which ended with a first round Class C1 state tourney loss at 29-6 overall.

The Blue Devils will continue their road stretch when visiting Columbus Scotus next Tuesday, September 8 and participating in the North Bend Central Triangular on Saturday, September 12 with David City Aquinas Catholic.

The next home outing for the Wayne High volleyball program will be on Tuesday, September 15 when WHS will entertain Guardian Angels Central Catholic.
