Blue Devil Volleyball Ends 10-Set Losing Streak At State, Broken Bow Wins In Four

LINCOLN – The top eight teams in each respective class began state tournament competition Thursday afternoon as Class C1 matches were played at Lincoln North Star.

Four Mid State conference volleyball teams qualified for state with three being in the same Subdistrict in Class C1.

In the opening contest #1 St. Paul swept #8 Battle Creek (25-17, 25-23, 25-17) to win 82 straight sets and 34 consecutive matches while the Bravettes ended their season at 28-6.

The second match up saw #4 Wayne High and #5 Broken Bow battling to advance onto the next round. WHS took the early lead thanks to a 25-22 first set before the Indians controlled the remainder of the match. The set one win for WHS snapped a 10-set losing streak since sweeping Lincoln Lutheran in 2002.

Broken Bow won the next three sets (25-20, 25-8, 25-18) to win their 25th consecutive match and improve to 33-2. Wayne High tied their win total of 29 for the third time in program history but ended the year 29-6.

In the third set, Wayne got ahead early 2-0 thanks to service aces before Broken Bow scored the next 10 points to pull away building momentum in the fourth set.

Double-double performers came from junior middle hitter Lauren Pick with 27 kills and 15 digs followed by senior outside hitter Emily Armstrong with 10 kills and 21 digs.

Senior libero Hailey Backer finished with 21 digs as sophomore outside hitter Sydney Redden posted 12 digs and a kill. Sophomore setter Kiara Krusemark finished with 42 set assists, three digs and three kills.

Other kills came from junior outside hitter Emily Longe (five) who had a solo block and sophomore outside hitter Rubie Klausen with three kills. Senior outside hitter Frankie Klausen also added eight digs. Service aces came from senior defensive specialist Erin O’Reilly, Pick, Armstrong and Backer.

Top seeded St. Paul will next face fifth seeded Broken Bow at 1 p.m. on the south court of the Pinnacle Bank Arena

Evening results saw #2 Wahoo sweep #7 Norfolk Catholic (25-17, 25-20, 25-19) and #3 Lincoln Lutheran swept #6 Chadron (25-20, 25-15, 25-19). Wahoo and Lincoln Lutheran will play at 3:30 p.m. on the PBA South Court Friday.

 

Class C2 northeast Nebraska results from Lincoln Southwest HS saw #4 Lutheran High Northeast (30-6) win in four sets over #5 Bishop Neumann (25-10) (25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18) and #2 Superior (30-2) won in four sets over #7 Wisner-Pilger (22-12) (26-24, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17). LHNE will next face #1 (33-3) St. Cecilia at 1 p.m. on the PBA North Court Friday.

In Class D1 from Lincoln Southeast HS: #6 Hartington Cedar Catholic (19-12) swept #3 Chambers/Wheeler Central (30-3) (26-24, 25-16, 25-12). HCC will next face #2 Diller-Odell (34-1) at 11 a.m. on the PBA South Court Friday.

In Class D2 from Lincoln Northeast HS: #2 Wynot (25-3) won in five sets over #7 Falls City Sacred Heart (21-14) (27-25, 13-25, 25-22, 17-25, 15-11). Wynot will next face #3 BDS (28-4) at 11 a.m. on the PBA North Court.
