Blue Devil Volleyball Concludes Season With Sixth Five Set Match Of 2021, Battle Creek Advances

PIERCE – A pair of Mid State Conference foes would stand in the way of the Wayne High volleyball team to begin postseason competition.

From Pierce Public Schools, #3 Wayne High opened the Class C1-7 Subdistrict with one of those conference foes being #2 Battle Creek Monday night.

After going to five sets earlier this month, Battle Creek and Wayne went to five sets again. It marked the second time for the Bravettes and the sixth time for the Blue Devils.

Scores of the match favored Battle Creek (25-22, 23-25, 29-31, 25-14, 15-9) to improve to 23-8 while Wayne High ended their season at 15-13. The Bravettes have won all three of their five set matches as WHS fell to 1-5 in five set matches.

Wayne High led 9-3 early in the fourth set before Battle Creek took a timeout and then rattled off 10 straight points to lead 13-9 and go onto win the fourth set 25-14 with momentum.

Senior Kiara Krusemark recorded a triple-double with 37 set assists, 20 digs and 10 kills while double-double performances came from sophomore Kate Hill with 22 kills and 13 digs as senior Rubie Klausen finished with 13 kills and 31 digs.

Senior Sydney Redden (one kill) stole the show with 66 digs while fellow senior Reagan Backer added 41 digs.

Senior Mady Sievers tacked on four kills and 12 digs; sophomore Anna Kaup had four kills and four digs as senior Courtney Brink totaled a kill and six digs. Faith Powicki also had 11 digs.

Wayne High used a trio of service aces from Klausen, Backer and Redden while block leaders came from Krusemark and Powicki both with three. Hill added two solo blocks and Brink came away with a solo block.

 

Unofficially, Battle Creek was led by senior Kenna Pochop with 24 kills, senior Lily Knull with 16 kills and junior Reagan Brummels with 14 kills.

Battle Creek finished with two service aces and six errors.

Earlier in the evening, #4 BRLD swept #5 Winnebago (25-9, 25-20, 25-14) while the final match of the night saw #1 Pierce sweep BRLD (25-15, 25-16, 25-21).

Tuesday’s C1-7 Subdistrict volleyball final will be played at 7 p.m. in Pierce featuring #1 Pierce vs. #2 Battle Creek in a rematch of the Mid State Conference Finals where Pierce won.

 

Other area Subdistricts: 

C1-6 (North Bend Central): #4 West Point-Beemer defeated #5 Fort Calhoun (no score) while #1 North Bend swept West Point-Beemer (25-13, 25-18, 25-21). The other match favored #3 Logan View/Scribner Snyder over #2 Arlington in four sets (no score).

C2-2 (Oakland): #4 Homer swept #5 Omaha Nation (25-14, 25-15, 25-11 ) before #1 Oakland-Craig swept Homer (25-15, 25-8, 25-8).. The middle match saw #2 Pender win in five sets over #3 Tekamah-Herman (25-23, 18-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-12 ).

C2-4 (Wisner): #1 Wisner-Pilger swept #4 Stanton (25-16, 25-17, 25-13) while #2 Guardian Angels Central Catholic won in four sets over #3 Clarkson/Leigh (25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 25-17).

C2-7 (Norfolk Catholic): #4 Fullerton won against #5 Shelby/Rising City (no score) before #1 Norfolk Catholic swept Fullerton (25-23, 25-21, 25-15). The middle match favored #2 Lutheran High Northeast over #3 Elkhorn Valley in straight sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-18)

D1-7 (Wausa): #4 Tri County Northeast swept #5 Walthill (25-8, 25-5, 25-15 ) before #1 Wausa won in five sets over Tri County Northeast (17-25, 25-14, 25-18, 20-25, 15-12). The middle match favored #3 Hartington Cedar Catholic over #2 Osmond in straight sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-23).
