BATTLE CREEK – Mid State Conference volleyball teams were back in action for the second straight night to determine the championship, consolation and fifth place matches later this week.
Winner’s bracket games were held in Battle Creek while loser’s bracket matches were played in Pierce.
Top seeded Wayne High took on #4 Hartington Cedar Catholic and won in four sets (25-21, 25-16, 17-25, 25-18). The Blue Devils are now 26-4 on the season surpassing last year’s win total of 25 while Cedar Catholic fell to 15-11.
Lauren Pick (eight digs) and Emily Armstrong again went off for a team-high 23 kills each to go along with a double-double for Armstrong adding 17 digs. Sydney Redden followed with three kills as well as two kills each from Mikaela McManigal and Frankie Klausen. Dig leaders went to Redden with 18 while Hailey Backer tallied 16 digs. Kiara Krusemark finished with 48 set assist and two kills.
Brynn Wortmann (four service aces) and Kenlee Goeden (three blocks) both recorded 11 kills for the Trojans followed by Abby Hochstein with 10 kills and five digs. Aiden Wortmann posted 36 set assists, five digs and four blocks while Megan Heimes finished with 21 digs.
The other winner’s bracket contest saw #3 Battle Creek defeat #2 Norfolk Catholic in four sets (25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 28-26). HCC will next face Norfolk Catholic Thursday at 6 p.m. for the consolation round with the championship contest featuring Wayne vs. Battle Creek at 7:30 p.m. from Battle Creek. WHS recently won in four sets over the Bravettes in Wayne last Thursday.
Loser’s bracket results favored #5 GACC sweeping #9 Boone Central/Newman Grove (25-19, 25-17, 25-12) and #6 O’Neill won in four sets over #7 Pierce (16-25, 25-20, 25-6, 25-17). GACC will next face O’Neill during the fifth-place match Thursday at 4:30 p.m. from Battle Creek.
#8 Crofton will join Boone Central/Newman Grove and Pierce during a triangular Thursday hosted by Pierce at a determined time by the host.
