ALBION – After putting in the miles all summer long and fall practice sessions, the Wayne High girls and boys cross country team began year 2021 Friday late afternoon.
From the Albion Country Club, WHS participated in the Boone Central Invite.
The Wayne High girls won their division with 36 points while the Blue Devil boys finished sixth with 101 points.
In the girls division, following Wayne High’s 36 points; Columbus High placed second with 51 points; Pierce took third with 66 points; Nebraska Christian came in fourth with 69 points and Fullerton rounded out the top five teams with 70 points. There were a total of nine varsity teams.
A total of 85 runners competed in the high school girls race.
Individually, Hannah Swanson of Nebraska Christian won the varsity girls race in a time of 20:27.
Wayne High leaders were freshmen Kyla Krusemark in second (21:11) and Jala Krusemark in fourth (21:26)’ while junior Laura Hasemann placed eighth (22:01), sophomore Frantzdie Barner (23rd – 23:43) and freshman Olivia Hanson finished 26th (23:55).
Other individual results came from freshman Yama Kantai (33rd – 24:38); freshman Ava Elliott (39th – 25:06); sophomore Raegan Maas (44th – 25:33); junior Erin Avery (57th – 26:54); freshman Norah Armstrong (62nd – 27:42) and sophomore Maya Spahr 81st – 32:24).
From the boys division, Norfolk Catholic won the team race with 20 points; followed by Columbus High in second with 31 points; Pierce took third with 61 points; Hastings placed fourth with 89 points and Columbus Scots rounded out the top five teams with 91 points. There were a total of 12 varsity boys teams.
A total of 150 runners competed in the boys high school race.
Individually, Noah Lawrence of Columbus won the varsity boys race in a time of 17:27.
Wayne High leaders were sophomore Jesus Zavala in runner-up (17:39) and sophomore Mason Ley (24th – 19:37).
Other individual results came from junior Ethan McCraney (42nd – 20:15); senior Ethan Wibben (51st – 20:37); junior Easton Blecke (56th – 20:49); sophomore Parker Kesting (89th – 21:52); freshman Kason York (95th – 22:09); freshman Ty Zach (99th – 22:15) and senior Carter Hasemann (141st – 25:25);
Junior High results on the 2,300-metetr course saw the Wayne High girls win with a team score of 29 points while the Blue Devil boys junior high team took runner-up with 48 points.
Eighth-graders Reagan McGuire (fourth – 9:52) and Lilyan Hurner (ninth – 10:19) paced the Wayne Junior High girls as well as eighth-graders Drew Miller (third – 8:24) and Boden Dobbins (14th – 9:18) leading the Wayne Junior High boys.
The Wayne High girls and boys cross country team will next participate in the Norfolk Catholic Invite from Skyview Lake on Friday, September 10 starting at 3 p.m. Junior High runners will compete around 4:30 p.m.
