Blue Devils Suffer 11-1 Defeat In Mercy Championship Game

OMAHA – Another weekend invite took over the Wayne High softball team’s schedule.

From the Mercy Invite in Omaha, Wayne High took to the diamond Saturday.

In their opening game, Wayne High defeated Platteview, 10-0 before also topping North Bend Central, 13-1 to earn a spot in the championship game. Bishop Neumann then snapped Wayne’s five-game winning streak with an 11-1 result. WHS is now 8-4 on the season as Saturday’s final loss marked the second time Bishop Neumann defeated the Blue Devils (10-5 on August 31 in Wahoo).

From the victory against Platteview, Wayne scored early and often with five runs in the first, two in the second and three more in the third to win 10-0 thanks to 13 hits.

Mikaela McManigal singled twice, doubled, drove in a run and scored twice while Brooklyn Kruse singled twice, drove in two runs and scored.

Aliah Schulz singled, drove in two runs and scored; Kendall Dorey singled twice and drove in a run; Taytem Ellis singled twice and scored; Virginia Kniesche singled, drove in a run and scored; Taytum Sweetland singled and scored twice; Hope O’Reilly singled and drove in a run as Brianna Nissen scored twice.

Kendall Dorey (70 pitches) secured the complete game win in four innings allowing one hit while striking out nine batters and walking three.

During the win over NBC, Wayne High led 3-1 after the first and scored three more runs in the second to lead 6-1. WHS then used a seven-run third inning to win 13-1 with 13 hits (five extra bases).

Dorey doubled twice and drove in two runs; Schulz singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored as O’Reilly doubled and drove in a run. Kniesche also singled, tripled, drove in two runs and scored twice.

Sweetland singled, drove in a run and scored; Kruse singled, drove in two runs and scored; McManigal singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice; Kierah Haase singled twice and scored twice; Ellis accounted for a RBI and run scored; Nissen scored twice as Hailey Schroeder scored once.

Dorey (56 pitches) accounted for the complete game win in three innings allowing one run while striking out seven batters and walking three.

In the loss to Bishop Neumann, the Cavaliers jumped ahead with two runs in the opening inning before outscoring WHS, 3-1 in the second to lead 5-1. Bishop Neumann then used a six-run third inning to win 11-1.

Two of the four Wayne High hits went extra bases led by Kruse with a triple as O’Reilly doubled and drove in a run. McManigal singled and scored as Schulz singled.

Dorey (80 pitches) suffered the loss in two and a third innings allowing 11 runs (six earned) off eight hits while walking three batters. Sammi Gubbels (eight pitches) worked two-thirds of an inning allowing one hit.

The Wayne High softball team will next host a triangular on Monday, September 13 with West Point-Beemer and Schuyler as well as compete on Tuesday, September 14 at Pierce with Boone Central.
