WAYNE – Following a postponement to the Wayne High softball schedule, the Blue Devils return to the home diamond and while after competing in a two-day road classic, the Wayne High volleyball team opens their home schedule this evening.

It’ll be a busy Tuesday with junior high volleyball at Hartington Cedar Catholic at 3:30 p.m., junior high football hosting West Point-Beemer starting at 4:30 p.m. and the freshman/sophomore football game at Hartington Cedar Catholic scheduled for 5:30 p.m. along with home WHS softball and volleyball hosing separate high school programs from Columbus.

The Wayne High softball team is 4-3 after having their home match with South Sioux City postponed from last Thursday. WHS previously went 1-1 during the Bishop Newman Triangular with a 10-5 loss to the host Cavaliers but shutout Highway 91, 10-0 on August 31.

Columbus Lakeview is 4-2 and will also compete in their first contest in the month of September after winning at Central City, 13-2 on August 31. The Viqueens dropped a 7-5 season-opener at Grand Island Central Catholic and lost one of three games in the Freeman Invite to Falls City.

The Varsity contest is slated to begin at 5 p.m. from the Wayne Softball Complex.

WHS will also visit Tekamah-Herman this week on Thursday, September 9 before taking part in the Omaha Mercy Softball Tournament on Saturday, September 11.

The Blue Devil volleyball team took on some tough C1 and C2 competition during the 2021 Northeast Nebraska (NEN) Jean Groth Volleyball Classic from Wisner-Pilger High School this past weekend. WHS split 2-0 sets with a win over Tekamah-Herman and lost to eventual Gold Division champion (6-0) Wisner-Pilger on Thursday.

Wayne High then went 1-2 with 2-0 losses to North Bend Central and Oakland-Craig but swept BRLD to now sit 2-4 on the season.

Tuesday night’s opponent will be 6-2 Columbus Scotus who were recently swept by Columbus Lakeview in the Scotus Invite this past weekend on September 4 and are now 6-2 on the year. The Shamrocks also swept the Plainview Round Robin on August 28 as their season-opening loss came at the hands of Kearney Catholic on August 26.

The WHS volleyball match vs. Columbus Scotus saw some changes as there’ll be no C-team game. JV will start at 5:30 p.m. and play three sets followed by varsity competition around 6:30 p.m. or immediately after the third set of the JV teams.

WHS will also compete in the North Bend Central Volleyball Invite on Saturday, September 11 this weekend.
