O’NEILL – The Wayne High softball team will compete in their second road game in a matter of six days and it will also feature their first conference matchup.
WHS will take their 4-0 record to O’Neill to battle with the Eagles, a team they defeated twice last season (9-1 in Wayne, 8-21 and 14-0 in Albion during conference tourney, 9-29). Both teams take part in the Mid State Conference.
The Wayne vs. O’Neill JV game will first be held at 5 p.m. followed by varsity competition at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
Four games into the year, the preseason-ranked Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 25-3 picking up wins over Class B Blair on the road and three home wins this past Saturday during the Wayne Invite against Class C opponents.
The Eagles, a Class C team, recently went 1-1 during the York Quad falling to the host York (13-1) and defeating Grand Island Central Catholic (4-3) while also having a game against Fairbury cancelled. O’Neill opened their season by topping St. Paul 6-3 at home on August 22 to sit 2-1.
Later this week, the Blue Devil softball team will compete in the Lincoln Public Schools Invite from the Doris Bair Softball Complex in Lincoln. Wayne will play games on Saturday, August 31 against 2-2 Waverly (B) at 11 a.m. followed by 2-0 Lincoln Southwest (defending Class A champions) and then close out the day against 3-1 Elkhorn (defending Class B champion, now in Class A).
