Blue Devil Softball Splits Road Triangular, Kruse Records Homerun Against Bishop Neumann; No-Hitter From Dorey Vs. HWY 91

WAHOO – Class B Wayne High competed with a pair of Class C softball teams in a road triangular Tuesday evening.

In Wahoo, WHS visited Bishop Neumann and Highway 91.

Wayne High suffered a 10-5 opening game loss with the host Bishop Neumann but concluded with a no-hitter, 11-0 victory to earn a split over HWY 91. Wayne High is now 4-3 on the season.

Bishop Neumann defeated Highway 91, 13-1 to remain undefeated at 10-0 while Highway 91 is now 8-5.

During the first game with the Cavaliers, Bishop Neumann scored three runs in the opening inning before Wayne High answered with a 2-1 second. Up 4-2, the host Cavaliers tallied four runs in the third and two more in the fourth before the Blue Devils ended the game with a three-run fifth. Final favored Bishop Neumann, 10-5.

Brooklyn Kruse posted a three-run homerun while Brianna Nissen singled twice and drove in two runs for Wayne. Kendall Dorey singled and doubled, Mikaela McManigal singled and scored, Hope O’Reilly and Aliah Schulz both singled as Taytum Sweetland, Kierah Haase and Taytem Ellis all scored.

Dorey (88 pitches) suffered the loss in three innings allowing nine earned runs off eight hits while striking out three batters and walking five. Sammi Gubbels (18) worked an inning allowing an earned run off one hit while walking one batter.

From the final game for Wayne, WHS scored early and often with two runs in the first, one in the second and two more runs in the third to lead 5-0. The Blue Devils added one run in the fourth and closed out the game with a five-run fifth to win 11-0 over Highway 91.

Brooklyn Kruse dominated at the plate with three singles, a double, three RBI and one run scored as Virginia Kniesche singled three times, drove in a run and scored three times for Wayne. Sweetland singled twice, drove in a run and scored; Dorey singled twice and drove in a run; McManigal singled, drove in a run and scored; Hope O’Reilly singled and drove in a run; Haase accounted for a RBI; Taytem Ellis and Schulz both scored twice as Nissen scored once.

Dorey (100 pitches) secured the complete game no-hitter in five innings striking out nine batters and walking five.

The Wayne High softball team was scheduled next to host South Sioux City on Thursday, September 2 but the game has since been postponed.
