OMAHA – A one-run semifinal loss saw the end of an early season winning streak for the Wayne High softball team who still dominated their two other opponents, 21-1.
The Omaha Mercy/Brownell-Talbott Softball Invite opened Saturday morning as the Blue Devils took on three Class B opponents.
In the first round, Wayne shutout South Sioux City, 11-0 before dropping a 3-2 decision to Plattsmouth. In the consolation round, the Blue Devils won 10-1 over the host Omaha Mercy. Wayne High is now 10-2 on the season.
During the win over South Sioux City, the Blue Devils poured in three runs during the first, seven in the second and one more in the third to win 11-0.
Kendall Dorey singled, doubled and drove in two runs while Virginia Kniesche as well as Mikaela McManigal both singled, drove in two runs and scored for Wayne. Taytum Sweetland singled, drove in a run and scored; Brianna Nissen singled and drove in a run; Hope O’Reilly singled and scored; Brooklyn Kruse and Hailey Schroeder both scored twice as single runs came from Kierah Haase, Nikki Fertig and Delaney Kruse.
Dorey picked up the complete game shutout, not-hitter in four innings striking out nine batters and walking one.

From the loss to Plattsmouth, the game was tied 1-1 through two innings as both teams then scored a run in the fifth. Plattsmouth scored the final run in the bottom of the sixth to win 3-2.
McManigal singled twice while Dorey tripled for Wayne. O’Reilly singled and scored; Logan Miller and Brooklyn Kruse both accounted for a RBI as Schroeder scored.
Dorey suffered the loss in five and a third innings allowing three runs (two earned) off four hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

In the third place victory against Omaha Mercy, Wayne High opened with back-to-back four run innings before Omaha Mercy got on the board during the fourth. WHS added two more runs in the fifth to win 10-1.
Dorey posted a four-hit game with a pair of singles, two doubles and four RBI while Nissen singled three times, drove in two runs and scored for Wayne. Sweetland doubled, drove in three runs and scored; Brooklyn Kruse singled twice and scored twice; Kniesche singled and scored; O’Reilly singled; Haase and Schroeder both scored twice as Delaney Kruse accounted for a run scored.
Dorey picked up the compete game victory in five innings allowing an earned run off two hits while striking out 12 batters and walking three.

The Wayne High softball team will next compete in a pair of road triangulars this week. WHS will visit West Point-Beemer and face Schuyler on Monday, September 14 and face Boone Central/Newman Grove and Pierce in Albion on Tuesday, September 15.
