Blue Devil Softball Places Third During Conference Tourney, Subdistrict Softball Aired On KCTY Monday

WEST POINT – Mid State Conference tourney softball teams competed amongst each this past Saturday with subdistricts beginning this week.

The Blue Devils were back at the Timmerman Softball Field in West Point for the second time in three days. Following an opening round defeat to #3 O’Neill, 7-3, the second-seeded Wayne softball team outscored Pierce 11-1 and Boone Central 14-1 to finish third in conference on Saturday. WHS is now 19-5 on the season.

#1 GACC defeated O’Neill in the championship game, 9-0 after opening the conference tournament with an 8-0 win over Boone Central. The Bluejays are 19-2 entering subdistricts.

In the loss to O’Neill, the Eagles jumped ahead early with two runs in the first and three more runs in the second to lead 5-0. Both teams scored a run in the fourth as WHS outscored O’Neill 2-1 in the fifth. No runs were scored in the final two innings which favored O’Neill, 7-3.

Kierah Haase singled, doubled and scored while Kendall Dorey singled and drove in two runs for Wayne. Brooklyn Kruse singled and drove in a run as Virginia Kniesche singled and scored twice.

Dorey suffered the loss in seven innings allowing seven runs (four earned) off 10 hits while striking out 10 batters and walking two.

During the victory over Pierce, WHS outscored the Bluejays 4-1 in the opening inning before scoring two runs in the second to lead 6-1. Wayne then brought in two more runs during the fourth and three in the fifth to win 11-1.

Dorey singled, doubled twice and drove in four runs while Haase singled and scored four times (drew three walks) for Wayne. Taytum Sweetland singled and drove in two runs, Kniesche singled twice and scored twice, Brooklyn Kruse singled and dove in a run, Hope O’Reilly singled and scored, Hailey Schroeder scored twice as Brianna Nissen and Nikki Fertig both scored.

Dorey picked up the win in five innings allowing an earned run off one hit while striking out nine batters and walking one.

From the win against Boone Central in the consolation round, Wayne started by outscoring the Cardinals 2-1 in the opening inning. WHS then added two runs in the third, three in the fourth and seven more in the fifth to win 14-1.

Dorey came away with two homeruns, four RBI and two runs scored while Brooklyn Kruse doubled, drove in two runs and scored three times for Wayne. Sweetland singled twice and drove in two runs; Mikaela McManigal singled twice and scored; Kniesche singled and scored twice; Logan Miller singled twice, drove in two runs and scored as other runs scored came from Nikki Fertig, Delaney Kruse, Schroeder, Nissen and Haase.

Dorey picked up the complete game victory in five innings allowing one run off one hit while striking out eight batters and walking two.

The Wayne High softball team will open their postseason as the top seed in the B-6 subdistrict and face #4 Schuyler (0-20) at 2 p.m. today. The other half of the bracket will feature #2 NEN (20-4) vs. #3 Crete (16-9) also at 2 p.m. The winner’s and loser’s will play each other at 4:30 p.m. All games will be played at the Wayne Softball Complex.
