Blue Devil Softball Crowned Conference Tournament Champs

WAYNE – The five Mid State Conference softball teams took to the Wayne Softball Complex over the weekend for tournament action.

On Saturday, Wayne hosted the hosted the tourney as the #2 seed featuring #1 GACC, #3 Boone Central/Newman Grove, #4 O’Neill and #5 Pierce.

In the opening round Wayne edged BC/NG, (3-2) while O’Neill defeated Pierce (13-10). In the second round GACC topped O’Neill (12-0) while the Cardinals eliminated Pierce (14-2).

In the consolation round O’Neill topped Boone Central/Newman Grove (15-13).

From the championship final, Wayne held off GACC for the second time in three days winning 5-0 to improve to 25-3 on the season. WHS will next host the B-6 subdistrict on Monday, October 7 – Tuesday, October 8. #1 Wayne will face #4 Schuyler at 4 p.m. on the NE field while #2 Seward will take on #3 Blue River also at 4 p.m. on the SE field.

During the one-run victory over the Cardinals, Kendall Dorey paced Wayne at the plate with a single, double and run scored while Kayla Fleming doubled, drove in a run and scored. Brooklyn Kruse singled as Virginia Kniesche also scored.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game win in seven innings allowing two runs off two hits while striking out 19 batters.

In the Mid State Conference finals, Brianna Nissen recorded a homerun and two RBI while Tori Kniesche singled and doubled for Wayne. Kruse tallied a pair of singles, two RBI and scored; Kendall Dorey singled and scored; Hope O’Reilly singled and drove in a run; Taytum Sweetland singled as Nicole Fertig and Virginia Kniesche both scored.

Tori Kniesche picked up the complete game win in seven innings allowing one hit while striking out 16 batters and walking one.
