LAUREL – With the Wayne High varsity volleyball team off until a two-day tournament later this week, the Blue Devil junior varsity squad competed in their own weekend tourney.
From Laurel, the Wayne JV volleyball team took part in a four-team tournament on Saturday.
In the opening round, Wayne JV defeated Homer in two sets (25-22; 25-14).
JV Wayne coach, Dale Hochstein said, “Wayne was able to force Homer into side outs while scoring several points in a row when holding serve.”
Wayne was led by CiCi Sashkiw-Risor with nine points and six aces followed by Elle Powicki (four aces) and Isabelle Francis (three aces) both with six points; Addison Sharpe and Kadence Rees both added two points and an ace; Adrienne Anderson had a point and an ace while Megan Magnuson accounted for a point.
Wayne JV then dropped the championship game to Hartington Cedar Catholic (16-25; 13-25).
Coach Hochstein added, “teams traded points in the first set to a 15-17 score before Cedar went on a run to close out the set. Cedar came out strong in the second set to take a 17-2 advantage after two rotations. Wayne battled back forcing four side outs and a five point run to close the gap before Cedar was able to take the set.”
Elle Powicki paced Wayne JV with six points and an ace; Francis had four points and Rees tallied a point.
The Wayne Junior Varsity team will next compete on Tuesday, September 6 when they travel to Columbus Scotus joining the Varsity program.
The Wayne High varsity volleyball team is 0-1 and will open the Jean Groth Volleyball Classic this Thursday, September 1 in Pool A from Pender. WHS will play Oakland-Craig at 6:30 p.m. and Pender at 7:30 p.m. with the first match being Pender vs. Oakland-Craig at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
More matches will be played on Saturday, September 3.
Pool B in Wisner: Wisner-Pilger vs. Wakefield; Wakefield vs. West Point-Beemer and Wisner-Pilger vs. West Point-Beemer.
Pool C in Pender: Archbishop Bergan vs. Tekamah-Herman; Tekamah-Herman vs. North Bend Central and North Bend Central vs. Archbishop Bergan.
Pool D in Wisner: Guardian Angels Central Catholic vs. Lutheran High Northeast; LHNE vs. Bancroft-Rosalie and Bancroft-Rosalie vs. GACC.
