WAYNE – Following a postponement to the start of the junior high boys basketball season in Wayne, seventh and eighth grade members began their 2021 campaign on the home court before going on the road in late January.
Wayne Junior High boys began their basketball season hosting Pierce this past Saturday and entertaining Columbus Lakeview on Monday.
From the weekend home-opener with Pierce, the Wayne seventh graders won 24-22 while the eighth-grade team topped the Bluejays 44-13. From the Monday home games with Lakeview, the Wayne seventh grade ‘B’ team lost 40-23 while the ‘A’ team also lost, 46-20 while eighth grade results favored both the Wayne ‘B’ (43-17) and Wayne ‘A’ teams (46-20).
Seventh grade leaders in the two-point Saturday victory came from Drew Miller (nine points) who hit a clutch three pointer to tie up the ball game at 22 all and Brodey Munter (four points) recorded the game-winner. Jace Jorgensen added five points, Payton Junck (four points) and Gavin Anderson (two points).
Moving into the seventh-grade game on Monday, Wayne ran into a hot shooting and aggressive Columbus Lakeview team according to coach Casey Brentlinger and his team is now 1-2.
The Wayne ‘B’ team was led by Brodey Munter with nine points followed by Parker Patefield with six points. Other scorers for Wayne were Drew Reinhardt (three), Mason Karsky (three) and Gavin Anderson (two).
Leading the Wayne ‘A’ team was Jace Jorgensen with seven points as Gavin Anderson and Drew Miller finished with four points each. Other scorers were Brodey Munter (two), Payton Junck (two) and Mason Karsky (one).
For the eighth-grade team, Wayne outscored Pierce 33-0 over the second and third quarters enroute to their 44-13 victory. Colson Nelsen led the team with 14 points while Gavin Redden and Kaden Keller each scored eight points. Also scoring for the Blue Devils were Jake Barner (six), Mar’Keidron King (five) and Romel Collins (three).
For the eighth-grade games earlier this week, coach Andi Diediker’s team improved to 3-0.
“B” game leaders came from Jake Barner with 16 points as well as Jamison Meyer and Romel Collins with nine points each. Mar’Keidron King (six), Alex Rodriguez (two) and Mason Beatty (one) rounded out the scoring.
Colson Nelsen paced the ‘A’ team with 15 points followed by Kaden Keller who added 13 points for the Devils and Gavin Redden scored six points. Also scoring for Wayne were Alex Rodriguez (five), Mar’Keidron King (five) and Jake Barner (two).
The Wayne Junior High boys basketball teams will next visit Hartington Cedar Catholic on Saturday, January 23 before traveling to face Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on Thursday, January 28.
