Blue Devil Girls Qualify Six-Member Team With District Runner-Up, Zavala Punches Cross Country State Ticket For Boys

PIERCE – With the regular season complete and conference races in the books, up next was district competition for high school cross country programs across the state.

From the Pierce Community Golf Course, Wayne High competed in the C-3 District Meet on Thursday.

The Wayne High girls finished runner-up with 41 points while the Blue Devil boys placed sixth with 77 points.

In the girls division, Pierce was crowned district champion with 33 points, followed by Wayne as district runner-up with 41 points and Bloomfield-Wausa took third with 54 points.

Individually, Darla Nelson of Bloomfield-Wausa won the district race in a time of 19:56.87 among the 60 runners.

Top 15 Wayne High results came from freshman Kyla Krusemark in fifth (20:33.32); freshman Jala Krusemark in ninth (20:49.99) and junior Laura Hasemann (11th – 20:59.7). Other Wayne girls who’ll compete at state includes freshman Olivia Hanson (16th – 22:17); freshman Norah Armstrong (24th – 22:38) and sophomore Frantzdie Barner (36th – 23:46).

C-3 District Cross Country

From the boys division, Battle Creek was crowned district champion with 59 points, followed by Pierce as district runner-up with 61 points and Hartington took third with 69 points.

Individually, Carson Noecker of Hartington won the district race in a time of 14:58.58 with 70 runners in competition.

Sophomore Jesus Zavala of Wayne will join Wayne High girls cross country as the lone male qualifier following his third place finish in a time of 17:02.2.

Other Blue Devil results came from sophomore Mason Ley (21st – 18:42); senior Ethan Wibben (26th – 18:57); sophomore Alex Frank (27th – 18:58); junior Ethan McCraney (33rd – 19:24) and junior Easton Blecke (47th – 20:24).

 

The 2021 NSAA State Cross Country Championships will be held at the Kearney Country Club on Friday, October 22. Class C girls will be the second race of the day at 12:30 p.m. with the Class C boys race at 1:30 p.m.

Complete schedule: girls Class D at noon; girls Class C at 12:30 p.m.; boys Class D at 1 p.m.; boys Class C at 1:30 p.m.; Class D/C awards at 2 p.m. followed by girls Class B at 2:30 p.m.; girls Class A at 3 p.m.; boys class B at 3:30 p.m.; boys Class A at 4 p.m. and Class B/A awards at 4:30 p.m.
