WAYNE – Just over a week out is the mark of tournament number one for the Wayne High girls golf team which will feature more than 12 outings including a few home competitions.

With the start of NSAA official practices beginning earlier this week on Monday, the Blue Devil girls golf team has been busy improving their game all summer.

Head coach Josh Johnson is entering his 15th year at the helm for WHS girls golf and said the team was busy working on their game leading into the season.

“We’ve been actually working on quite a bit of stuff,” said Johnson. “We’ve had a really good summer. We got eight girls that we’ve seen pretty regularly all summer. Hitting a lot of range, the fundamental stuff. Just got to get the little tweaks but they’ve also played a lot of golf. So, that’s really nice to see the girls out playing a lot.”

Wayne High girls golfers were able to take part in groups of three over the summer. Members of the team are looking to build team chemistry and build day-by-day.

“As a group, I’m just excited about their hunger,” Johnson added. “I mean they love playing golf, they love going out and competing with each other. So, we’re going to put the old with the new. Really excited to see that blend of experience and youth. See where we can go with it.”

The top returner is senior Riley Haschke who was a state qualifier joined by junior Trinity Surber along with three sophomores and three freshmen.

Leading into the first invitational, WHS will be working on chipping and putting as well as walking up and down hills preparing for the Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer on Friday, August 19.

Coach Johnson praises Brian Gibson, course superintendent at the Wayne Country Club and his crew with their work on the course.

“Can’t say enough of all the hard work they’ve done all summer to get our course in really good shape,” Johnson mentioned. “Of course, Kyle Schellpeper, our pro out there is always helpful to do whatever he can however he can. Just a great staff out at the country club for us to be successful.”

Complete schedule.

Home events for the Wayne High girls golf team include Friday, August 26 for an invitational, home triangular on Tuesday, August 30 along with a second home triangular on Thursday, September 15 and another home invite on Thursday, September 22.
