CROFTON – Following a 10-day break in the action for members of the Wayne High cross country program, WHS went back to work for meet number four of the season.
From Lakeview Golf Course in Crofton, the Blue Devils took part in the Crofton Invite on Thursday.
The Wayne High girls finished second with 37 points while the WHS boys took fourth with 68 points.
South Sioux City won the girls division with 18 points, followed by Wayne in second (37) with a tie-breaker over the host Crofton who placed third (37), Bloomfield/Wausa took fourth (53) and Hartington-Newcastle rounded out the top five teams with 82 points.
The Wayne High girls were led by a runner-up finish from senior Laura Hasemann in a time of 20:56.65 along with an eighth place finish from sophomore Kyla Krusemark (21:53.74).
Other Blue Devil results came from freshman Lilyan Hurner (14th – 22:46.18); sophomore Olivia Hanson (18th – 22:56.88), junior Frantzdie Barner (36th – 25:09.66) as sophomore Jala Krusemark started the race but recorded a DNF (did not finish).
Junior Jordyn Arens from Crofton won the girls 5,000-meter race in a time of 19:31.66 among the 51 runners.
The Wayne Junior Varsity squad won their team race with 18 points totaling 18 runners. Freshmen Kennasyn Blecke (third – 24:27.46), Josie Ley (fifth – 25:21.38) and Sharon Vasquez (ninth – 29:27.13) as were sophomores Norah Armstrong (fourth – 25:14.24) and Ava Elliot (sixth – 25:36.83) were among the top 10. Junior Raegan Maas took 13th (30:33.25).
South Sioux City won the boys division with 25 points, followed by Bloomfield/Wausa in second (50), Norfolk Catholic placed third (67), Wayne took fourth (68) and Hartington-Newcastle rounded out the top five teams with 82 points.
The Wayne High boys were led by a fifth place finish from freshman Drew Miller in a time of 17:54.77.
Other top Blue Devil results came from sophomore Kasen York (12th – 18:38.36); seniors Easton Blecke and Ethan McCraney (25th – 26th) both in a time of 19:36.74; junior Adrian Klinetobe (30th – 19:51.52) and junior Mason Ley (36th – 20:14.71).
Senior Carson Noecker from Hartington won the boys 5,000-meter race in a time of 14:53.09 (2:07 faster than runner-up) among the 56 runners.
The Wayne JV team also finished fourth with 51 points and were led by freshman Boden Dobbins in fifth place in a time of 20:28.68 of the 29 runners. Other results came from sophomore Zander Liston (17th – 22:19.09); freshman Blade Nelson (20th – 22:31.56); junior Parker Kesting (24th – 24:23.76) and freshman Payton Junck (27th – 25:18.29).
In junior high action, Wayne boys finished first with 19 points as eighth graders Cole Zach (6:55.31) and Emmanuel Gonzalez (7:08.03) went 1-2 among the 63 runners. Teammate Alejandro Archundia also finished ninth (7:37.35).
Other eight grade results came from Lance Brink (17th – 8:07.32); Landen Claussen (19th – 8:16.77); Jenner Dorey (35th – 8:41.11); Camden Hall (36th – 8:42.328); Cale Eischeid (46th – 9:28.55) and Landen Sharer (50th – 9:39.23).
Seventh graders Grady Maas (15th – 8:04.22) and Callen Gamble (40th – 9:04.50) were also in action.
Eighth-grader Essynce Owens-Webb won the junior high girls race in a time of 7:59.12 among the 37 runners. Seventh graders Hannah Brogren (19th – 9:15.70) and Gracelynn Daniels (27th – 10:12.61) also competed.
The Wayne High girls and boys cross country team will next compete in the UNK meet on Monday, September 26 at 12:30 p.m. in Kearney.
