Blue Devil Girls End Season With Subdistrict Semifinal Loss

PIERCE – For the second straight night, the Wayne High girls basketball team was in Pierce as the Blue Devils battled with the host Bluejays for the third time this season.

From Pierce Public Schools, #1 Pierce took part in their first postseason game against #5 Wayne High Tuesday evening in the C1-6 Subdistrict Tourney.

After building a six-point lead at the break, Pierce was able to hold off Wayne for a final of 39-29. The Bluejays snapped a three-game losing streak and are now 13-11 on the season while WHS ended their year at 7-19.

Both teams scored seven points in the opening quarter as Pierce built their six-point lead at the break thanks to a 13-7 second. The Bluejays led 20-14 at the half and outscored WHS 8-7 in the third and 11-8 in the fourth. Final, again favored Pierce 39-29.

The lone senior on the team, Emily Longe paced Wayne in scoring with 16 points while sophomore Brooklyn Kruse added eight points. Junior Rubie Klausen poured in four points while freshman Kierah Haase scored a point.

WHS shot 8-12 from the foul line.

For Pierce, it was senior Kenzie Moeller stealing the show scoring 23 points which included five made three’s and 6-6 at the charity stripe. Fellow senior Abby Meier added nine points, junior Gina Wragge scored three points as senior Faith Lubischer and sophomore Ella Gaes each finished with two points.

Pierce finished 12-18 from the free throw line.

Pierce will next face #2 Winnebago who defeated #3 Battle Creek, 60-55 for the C1-6 Subdistrict championship game on Thursday, February 18 at 7 p.m. in Pierce.


C1-6 Girls Subdistrict (Pierce): #5 Wayne defeated #4 Homer, 53-40 on Monday before #1 Pierce defeated WHS, 39-29 on Tuesday. The other semifinal on Tuesday saw #2 Winnebago defeat #3 Battle Creek, 60-55. Pierce will face Winnebago at 7 p.m. Thursday.

C2-3 Subdistrict (West Point): #1 GACC defeated #4 Tekamah-Herman, 84-33 while #2 Howells-Dodge defeated #3 Wisner-Pilger, 59-48. GACC will face Howells-Dodge at 7 p.m. Thursday.

C2-4 Subdistrict (Bancroft): #1 BRLD defeated #4 Omaha Nation, 72-35 while #2 Pender defeated #3 Wakefield, 69-47. BRLD will face Pender at 7 p.m. Thursday.

C2-5 Subdistrict (Crofton): #4 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge defeated #5 Creighton, 46-41 on Monday while #1 Crofton defeated LCC, 71-41 while the other semifinal on Tuesday favored #3 North Central over #2 Ponca, 40-35. Crofton will face North Central at 7 p.m. Thursday.

D1-3 Subdistrict (Humphrey): #4 Osmond defeated #5 Wausa, 45-40 on Monday as #1 Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family defeated Osmond, 69-26 on Tuesday. The other semifinal on Tuesday saw #2 Plainview defeat #3 Tri County Northeast, 53-43. Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family will face Plainview at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

D1-4 Subdistrict (Hartington): #5 Niobrara/Verdigre defeated #4 Bloomfield, 49-46 on Monday while #1 Hartington Cedar Catholic defeated Niobrara/Verdigre, 71-50 on Tuesday. The other semifinal on Tuesday saw #3 Boyd County defeat #2 Hartington-Newcastle, 47-45. HCC will face Boyd County at 7 p.m.

D2-5 (Wynot): #4 Winside defeated #5 Walthill in Walthill, 63-23 on Monday while #1 Wynot defeated Winside, 58-26 on Tuesday. The other semifinal on Tuesday favored #2 Randolph over #3 Santee, 55-46. Wynot will face Randolph at 6 p.m. Thursday.
