Blue Devil Girls Drop Regular Season Finale, Boys Snap Losing Streak At Arlington

ARLINGTON – The Wayne High girls closed their regular season on the road as the Blue Devils boys began back-to-back nights of ball games.

From Arlington high school, the Eagles hosted WHS Friday night.

In the girls contest, it was a low scoring first quarter which favored Arlington (6-4). A higher scoring second also went to the Eagles (20-11) to put them out front 26-15 entering the locker room. In the second half, Arlington won the third (16-8) as the fourth saw Wayne High win the quarter (17-16). But, the game went to Arlington 58-40 to improve to 15-8 as WHS fell to 6-13, dropping six of their final seven games.

Ashton Boyer scored all her 13 points in the fourth to pace Wayne High in scoring. Kendall Dorey added 10 points off the bench along with Sarah Greenwald with five points. Tori Kniesche and Gabi Meyer both tacked on four points while Annie Kniesche and Allison Claussen tallied two points.

The Arlington leader was Jaidyn Spoon with 16 points.

From the boys game, Wayne High jumped ahead thanks to a 22-8 first quarter. WHS also won the second (21-12) to lead 43-20 at the break. Arlington looked to mount a comeback with a 13-10 third, but Wayne High ended the game with a 21-17 fourth. Final saw Wayne High snap a five-game losing streak with the 74-50 win. WHS is now 9-11 as the Eagles fell to 2-18.

Shea Sweetland poured in a team-high 23 points for Wayne High. Other double figure scoring came from Marcus Fertig with 12 as 10 points and five boards were posted by Cody Rogers. Trevor DeBoer scored eight points while seven point scorers were Aaron Reynolds, Tyrus Eischeid and Drew Buck.

Brant Hilzendeger paced Arlington with 18 points while Aiden Foreman tallied 12 points and five rebounds.

The Wayne High girls will open postseason play in the C1-7 Subdistrict at the Norfolk Catholic Activity Center on Tuesday, February 12. #3 Wayne will face #2 Pierce at 7:45 p.m. following the 6 p.m. of #1 O’Neill vs. #4 Wakefield/Allen.
