Blue Devil Girls And Boys Secure Home Wins To Begin Three-Game Home Stretch

WAYNE – A busy week of home basketball for the Wayne High girls and boys programs began with a northeast Nebraska showdown Tuesday night.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr High School gymnasium, the Blue Devils welcomed in Laurel-Concord-Coleridge for a week-night, non-conference doubleheader.

The Wayne girls defeated LCC, 40-29 while the Blue Devil boys won 51-39 over Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.

The WHS girls improved to 7-7 while the Bears fell to 6-7 as the Wayne boys are now 12-1 with LCC falling to 10-3.

During the girls game, Wayne High held onto a 16-15 first quarter lead before outscoring LCC, 10-3 to lead 26-18 at the break. The Blue Devils then extended their lead thanks to a 9-4 third as LCC won the fourth, 7-5. Final favored Wayne High, 40-29.

The Wayne High girls were led by Brooklyn Kruse with 14 points followed by Mia Nelsen with eight points. Mady Sievers poured in six points, Rubie Klausen finished with five points, Frantzdie Barner added four points and Kierah Haase tallied a three-pointer.

WHS shot 2-9 (2-8 in fourth) from the foul line.

LCC leaders were Kinsey Hall with eight points while Haley Christensen, Tali Erwin and Berniece McCorkindale all scored five points. Other LCC scoring came from Mallory Eriksen with four points and Jordynn Urwiler finished with two points.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge finished 2-6 at the charity stripe.

 

In the boys outing, Wayne led 17-16 after the first quarter before extending their lead thanks to a 10-7 second. WHS led 27-23 at the break. The Blue Devils then outscored LCC, 10-6 in the third and 14-10 in the fourth. Final favored Wayne High, 51-39.

The Wayne High boys were led by Tanner Walling hitting five three-pointers and scoring 27 points. Alex Phelps and Sedjro Agoumba both added six points, Brandon Bartos and Daniel Judd each finished with five points as Camron Weaselhead scored two points.

WHS shot 5-12 from the foul line.

LCC leaders were Evan Haisch with 14 points, Grant Erwin fouled out with seven points while Jake Rath and Deagan Puppe were both held to five points. Wilton Roberts and Carter Kvols each hit a three-pointer as Lucas Rasmussen scored two points.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge finished 6-14 at the charity stripe.

The Wayne High girls and boys will both next host North Bend Central on Thursday, December 13 as the LCC basketball teams will visit Tri County Northeast (Allen-Emerson/Hubbard) also on Thursday for a make-up game from mid-December. The games in Allen will be carried on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com with pregame show coverage set for around 5:45 p.m.
