Blue Devil Five-Game Winning Streak Snapped In Extras Despite Five-Run Sixth

PENDER – With a weekend trip to Hastings planned, the Wayne High softball team played in their second road outing of the week.

From the Dave Nitzschke Complex in Pender, the Class B Thursday night showdown featured Wayne High at NEN (Wisner-Pilger/Pender/BRLD).

NEN held the early lead before tying the game up at 5-5 and winning in extras, 7-6. NEN improved to 12-10 while the Blue Devils had their five-game winning streak come to an end and are now 13-5.

Following a scoreless first, NEN started the scoring off with a run in the second, two in the third and one more run in the fourth to lead 4-0. After both teams were unable to score in the fifth, WHS posted a five-run sixth and led 6-5. NEN then tied the game in the home half of the seventh with a run and after giving up a run in the top of the eighth, scored two more runs to win in walk-off fashion. Final favored NEN, 7-6 in eight innings.

Hope O’Reilly singled twice and scored; Brooklyn Kruse singled and drove in two runs as Kendall Dorey singled, drove in a run and scored for Wayne. Kierah Haase singled and scored; Virginia Kniesche singled; Taytem Ellis accounted for a RBI and two runs scored as Aliah Schulz scored.

Dorey (171 pitches) suffered the loss in seven and a third allowing seven runs (six earned) off 13 hits while striking out seven batters and walking eight.

Wayne High will next compete in the Adams Central Invite in Hastings on Saturday, September 25. WHS will open with Hastings St. Cecilia at 10 a.m. with the winner or loser to face either Kearney Catholic or Polk County at 11:30 a.m. The other half of the bracket will feature Adams Central vs. Ord and Cozad vs. Gering.
