ALBION – After a pair of time trial events set the field for the Wayne High girls and boys cross country it was time for their first competition.
From the Albion Country Club, the Blue Devils took part in the Boone Central/Newman Grove Invite.
The Wayne High girls placed sixth with 76 points while the boys took seventh with 113 points.
Top Blue Devil female runners came from sophomore Laura Hasemann in seventh (20:59) followed by freshman Frantzdie Barner in 12th (21:41). Other results came from senior Andi Belt (34th – 24:45); freshman Reagan Maas (39th – 25:24) and freshman Maya Spahr (69th – 36:07).
The WHS boys were led by freshman Jesus Zavala placing 15th in a time of 18:07. Senior Christopher Woerdemann finished 33rd (19:12); sophomore Calvin Starzl took 34th (19:33); senior Treyton Blecke came in 44th (20:22) and sophomore Ethan McCraney took 47th (20:42).
Other Blue Devil results came from freshman Mason Ley (53rd – 20:59); freshman Alex Frank (57th – 21:11); senior Sean Aschoff (62nd – 21:30); sophomore Easton Blecke (67th – 21:51); freshman Parker Kestin (70th – 21:57); sophomore Braydn McCorkindale (73rd – 22:12); senior Liam Spieker (75th – 22:15); junior Carter Hasemann (92nd – 23:47) and senior Nathan Kufner (113th – 26:27).
Boone Central/Newman Grove won the girls division with 27 points; Norfolk Catholic followed in second with 55 points; Fullerton (58 pts) came in third; Nebraska Christian (62 pts) was fourth and Columbus (70 pts) rounded out the top five teams.
Top individuals (37 runners): three Pierce juniors stole the show led by Alexus Sindelar (19:10); Payten Simmons (20:15) and Callie Arnold (20:16).
The top boys division team was Pierce with 37 points; followed by Norfolk Catholic (43 pts) in runner-up; Columbus Scotus (43 pts) took third; Columbus High (46 pts) finished fourth and O’Neill (94 pts) placed fifth.
Top individual (123 runners): senior Mason Sindelar of Pierce won the 5k race in a time of 15:52.
The Wayne High junior high girls team placed first with 16 points as eighth-grader Kyla Krusemark won the approx. 2,400-meter race in a time of 9:41 followed by seventh-grader Reagan McGuire in second at 9:49. The Blue Devil junior high boys placed fifth with 66 points as eighth-grader Gavin Redden won the race in a time of 8:15 and seventh-grader Drew Miller took fifth in a time of 8:40.
The Wayne High girls and boys cross country team will be off until next Friday, September 11 during the Norfolk Catholic Invite from Skyview Lake starting at 3 p.m.
