WAYNE – Spring sports for Wayne High held their picture day last week and will be looking to have outdoor areas cleared up for their respective sport.
The Wayne High boys golf team has been cooped up inside hitting on simulators and into nets while working on their chipping and putting.
Josh Johnson has been coaching golf for 12 years for the girls and is beginning his third year with the boys team.
There are 19 high school boys out for the team with a handful of eighth grade managers.
The team graduated three seniors including one off their district team from last year. Returning district golfers will be Zach Urbanec, Jonah Brodersen, Peyton DeWald and Shea Sweetland.
“So, I got four out of the five guys back from the last two years’ actually district squads,” said Johnson. “We got a pretty experienced core group, that’s for sure to include all those new guys.”
The first home competition will be a triangular with Oakland-Craig and Wisner-Pilger in early April along with looking to set up a dual with West Point. Both will mainly be for JV competition.
With larger numbers, the team will try and get 8-12 golfers on varsity with others shuffling in JV. The team will compete in 12 invites this season and coach Johnson will look to bring as many guys as he can.
“Last year we went about 10 deep I think and sent people to quite a few places,” Johnson added. “So, I’m going to try and get as many of our at least top 12 probably in there to as many different meets as we can.”
The Wayne High boys golf team will begin their season with road invites at the Norfolk Country Club on Thursday, March 28 and the Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer on Monday, April 1.
Coach Johnson is excited to bring in the underclassmen working with the returners.
“We’re really excited to see how much they can grow over the season,” Johnson mentioned. “See how much they can push themselves. And by the end of the year we’ll definitely see what can happen.”
WHS will host the MAC Invite on May 2 from the Wayne Country Club, Crofton will host the Mid State Conference Meet on April 22 with Districts to be held in Blair on May 13-14.
