WAYNE – With the goal of qualifying for another trip to the 2021 NSAA Boys State Basketball Tournament, Wayne High began their postseason run Tuesday evening.
From Wayne Jr/Sr High School, the top seeded Blue Devils hosted the C1-7 Subdistrict Tournament.
Wayne High opened with a second half comeback win against #4 West Point-Beemer, 48-44. The Blue Devils snapped a two-game losing streak improving to 20-5 while the Cadets ended their season at 9-14. West Point-Beemer lost 10 of their 14 games by five points or less.
Later in the evening, #2 Logan View/Scribner-Snyder defeated #3 Winnebago, 57-52. The Raiders will now face Wayne at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 25 for the C1-7 Subdistrict Championship game. Pregame coverage on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com is set for 6:45 p.m.
West Point-Beemer took the early lead at 15-11 in the opening quarter before building their lead thanks to a 12-2 second. The Cadets led 27-13 at the break. Wayne High then started their comeback with a 20-11 third and 15-6 fourth. Final again favored WHS, 48-44.
The Blue Devils were led in scoring by sophomores Alex Phelps and Daniel Judd with 16 points each while senior Colton Vovos added eight points. Junior Brandon Bartos tallied four points as junior Tanner Walling and sophomore Sedjro Agoumba both scored two points.
Wayne High shot 13-16 from the foul line (9-10 in the fourth).
West Point-Beemer leaders were juniors Keegan Doggett and Miguel Perez with 13 points each. Seniors Manny Barragan and Drake Repschlaeger both finished with five points, junior Riley Penrose added four points as seniors Jesus Barragan and Zachary Vander Griend both scored two points.
The Cadets shot 5-7 from the charity stripe.

C1-8 (Pierce): #1 Pierce defeated #4 O’Neill, 58-44 while #3 Battle Creek defeated #2 Norfolk Catholic, 62-54. Pierce will face Battle Creek at 7 p.m. Thursday.
C2-3 (Oakland): #4 GACC defeated #5 Tekamah-Herman, 50-48 on Monday and suffered a 55-30 loss to #1 Oakland-Craig on Tuesday, February 23. The other Tuesday semifinal favored #2 Clarkson-Leigh over #3 Wisner-Pilger, 52-37. Oakland-Craig will face Clarkson-Leigh at 7 p.m. Thursday.
C2-4 (Lyons-Decatur High School): #5 Omaha Nation defeated #4 Tri County Northeast, 66-46 on Monday, February 22 and suffered a 68-40 loss to #1 BRLD on Tuesday, February 23. The other Tuesday semifinal favored #2 Wakefield over #3 Ponca, 64-43. BRLD will face Wakefield Thursday at 7 p.m.
C2-5 (Hartington): #5 Crofton defeated #4 Plainview, 40-31 on Monday, February 22 and suffered a 68-29 loss to #1 Hartington Cedar Catholic on Tuesday, February 23. The other Tuesday semifinal favored #2 Lutheran High Northeast over #3 Elkhorn Valley, 55-43. HCC will face LHNE at 7 p.m. Thursday.
D1-4 (LCC): #4 Hartington-Newcastle defeated #5 Randolph, 50-40 on Monday, February 22 and suffered a 77-51 loss to #1 Walthill on Tuesday, February 23. The other Tuesday semifinal favored #2 Laurel-Concord-Coleridge over #3 Homer, 81-48. Walthill will face LCC at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
D2-4 (Humphrey): #1 Humphrey St. Francis defeated #4 Winside, 71-23 while #2 Pender defeated #3 St. Edward, 57-32. Humphrey St. Francis will face Pender at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
