Blue Devil Boys Avenge Loss From Last Year’s Championship Rematch With HCC

WAYNE – The 2018 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout closed out day one Saturday night with the boys blue division.

Back at Rice Auditorium, #4 Wayne High took on #1 Hartington Cedar Catholic. Game number six of the tourney marked a rematch from last year’s boys division title game.

WHS took control early with a 19-11 first quarter before HCC outscored the Blue Devils (16-15) in the second. At the break, Wayne led 34-27. The Trojans again cut into the deficit with a 15-14 third while knocking down a three-pointer to trail by two points late in the game. But, Wayne High pulled away thanks to a 19-13 fourth to win 67-55. WHS improved to 5-3 as the Trojans fell to 4-2.

Wayne High was led in scoring by Tyrus Eischeid with 17 points as Marcus Fertig tallied 15 points. Kallan Herman went off of 14 points as Shea Sweetland ended with eight points.

WHS finished 21-30 from the foul line, 12-14 in the fourth.

Matthew Becker stole the show for the Trojans with 26 points. Charlie Schroeder added seven points as Tate Thoene poured in six points.

HCC closed the game with 12-20 from the charity stripe.
