Wayne High Girls Suffer 27-52 Loss To Ponca; Blue Devil Boys Win 38-20

WAYNE – As the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams open their 2021-22 season Friday night with a home outing against Battle Creek, the Saturday doubleheader will be on air.

WHS is hosting Battle Creek Friday starting at 4:30 p.m. for the JV games (boys at elementary/girls at high school), girls varsity at 6:15 p.m. and boys to follow from the Jr/Sr High School.


The Wayne girls are coming off a 7-19 season and as for Ponca, their girls team finished as Class C2 runner-up for a second straight year after going 21-5 last season.

Last year, Ponca won 53-34 in Wayne. Ponca is off to a 1-0 start after winning at Hartington-Newcastle, 57-23 on Thursday.

In the boys match-up, Wayne High is coming off a 23-7 season placing fourth at state in Class C1 while the Indians went 12-11 last year.

Wayne High secured a 49-22 home win over Ponca last year. The Indians are 0-1 this season after suffering a 33-26 road loss at Hartington-Newcastle on Thursday.

Saturday’s schedule will then begin with JV games at 4 p.m., varsity girls at 5:15 p.m. and boys varsity after. Pregame show coverage on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com with Blake Hilkemeier is set for around 5 p.m.
