Blue Devil Baseball Takes Control Of First Meeting Against Thurston-Cuming

PENDER – With three games to be played in two days for the Wayne High baseball team, WHS took to the road on Thursday.

From Tom Nitzschke Field in Pender, the Blue Devil baseball team visited Thurston-Cuming County (Pender/BRLD/Emerson-Hubbard).

Wayne High jumped ahead early and won by run-rule of 14-1 in five innings over Thurston-Cuming. The Blue Devils are off to a 2-0 start while the TC Thunder fell to 1-2.

The two teams will meet again in Wayne on April 12.

In the Class B high school baseball outing, Wayne poured in three runs during the first inning and added four more runs in the top of the second. The Blue Devils outscored Thurston-Cuming, 4-1 in the third before scoring two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to win 14-1. WHS outhit the TC Thunder, 9-3 as Thurston-Cuming accounted for five errors compared to none from Wayne.

Wayne High was led at the plate by James Dorcey with two singles, three RBI and three runs scored as Gavin Redden singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice. Cooper Zara doubled and drove in a run; Devin Anderson doubled and scored; Brandon Bartos doubled and scored twice; Brooks Kneifl singled, drove in a run and scored; Toby Braun singled and scored; Kaleb Moormeier accounted for a RBI and three runs scored; Wyatt Heikes and Calvin Starzl both added a RBI as Jacob Anderson scored.

Redden (60 pitches) picked up the victory in three innings allowing an earned run off two hits while waking four batters. Dorcey (20 pitches)) worked two innings allowing one hit while striking out two batters.

Top TC Thunder performances came from Trent Hansen with a single and RBI as Lakota Russman and Pierce Paulson both singled. Michael Cooney scored the lone TC Thunder run.

The Wayne High baseball team is right back on the road on Friday, March 25 starting at 4:30 p.m. with a varsity doubleheader at the Sam Crawford Baseball Field in Wahoo. WHS will visit Wahoo/Bishop Neumann/Lincoln Lutheran.

Thurston-Cuming will next host Concordia/Brownell Talbot/Omaha Christian Academy on Monday, March 28.
