CENTRAL CITY – Wayne High baseball closed out a three-game week ahead of four more games next week with a weekend road outing.
From Kernel Field in Central City, the Blue Devils visited Central City/Fullerton/Centura on Saturday.
The team from Central City defeated Wayne High, 13-3 in five innings. The Blue Devils fell to 3-4 while Central City/Fullerton/Centura improved to 7-0.
During the Class B varsity game, Wayne opened scoring with a run in the first while both teams scored once in the second. Down 2-1, Central City posted a three-run third inning and outscored WHS, 4-1 in the fourth to lead 8-3. Central City closed out the game with a five-run fifth to win 13-3. Central City outhit WHS, 9-6 as both teams committed two errors.
Devin Anderson singled twice, drove in a run and scored twice while James Dorcey and Aiden Liston both singled and drove in a run for Wayne High. Gavin Redden and Brandon Bartos both singled as Wyatt Heikes scored once.
Aiden Liston (49 pitches) suffered the loss in three and a third allowing seven runs (three earned) off five hits while striking out one batter and walking two. James Dorcey (31 pitches) worked two-thirds of relief allowing five earned runs off four hits while striking out one batter and walking two. Cooper Zara (13 pitches) got the final out after allowing an earned run and walking two batters.
The Wayne High baseball team will next play four games next week (three in Wayne). WHS will host GACC/Scribner-Snyder-West Point-Beemer on Monday, April 4; host South Sioux City on Tuesday, April 5; visit St. Paul/Palmer on Thursday, April 7 and host Fort Calhoun (rescheduled game) on Saturday, April 9. Varsity games will start at 4:30 p.m. during the week and the rescheduled Saturday date will open at 11 a.m. for the varsity teams.
