Battle Of Halves For Girls Contest, Blue Devil Boys Open Season With Road Win Over Battle Creek

BATTLE CREEK – Friday night marked the season opener for both the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams.

WHS began their 2018-19 campaign on the road at Battle Creek for a double header.

From the girls game, Wayne High was up 8-6 after the opening quarter and added a 16-11 second to lead 24-17 at the break. But, in the second half it was Battle Creek’s turn to score. The Bravettes outscored WHS 19-8 in the third and 13-11 in the fourth to win 49-43. Battle Creek begins their season at 1-0 while Wayne falls to 0-1.

Wayne High was led in scoring by Frankie Klausen with 16 points. Rubie Klausen, Ashton Boyer and Gabi Meyer all tallied six points. Allison Claussen added four points, Kendall Dorey and Tori Kniesche both scored two points and Sidney Biggerstaff tacked on a point.

In the boys game, Wayne held a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter before the Braves cut into the deficit in the second. At the break, Wayne led 29-22. The Blue Devils remained ahead in the second half with a 17-15 third quarter while Battle Creek added a low-scoring fourth (7-4). Final found Wayne High winning 50-44 to open their season at 1-0 as the Braves fell to 0-1.

Wayne High was led in scoring by Kallen Herman with 13 points going 4-8 from behind the arc as Tyrus Eischeid added 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field while leading the team in rebounds with seven. Marcus Fertig tallied eight points as Tyler Gilliland picked up another seven points.

Wayne High finished 16-46 (34.8%) from the field, 4-14 (28.6%) from behind the arc and 14-21 (66.7%) from the foul line.

The Wayne High girls and boys were scheduled to host Ponca Saturday, but the game has been postponed until a later date.
