Battle Creek Runs Away With Conference Tourney, Four Blue Devils Earn Medals

WAYNE – Thursday marked conference tournament time for Mid State wrestling programs traveling to Wayne America.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr high school gymnasium, WHS was the host for the 2019 Mid State Conference Wrestling Tournament.

Battle Creek topped Pierce, 224-175 to be crowned Mid State Conference champions in the team standings. Hartington Cedar Catholic followed in third with 105 points, Boone Central/Newman Grove placed fourth with 99 points and Norfolk Catholic rounded out the top five teams with 96 points.

O’Neill (sixth – 82.5), Wayne High (seventh – 72.5), Guardian Angel Central Catholic (eighth – 58) and Crofton-Bloomfield (ninth – 33.5) closed out the nine conference teams.

Wayne High will next be in action on Friday and Saturday, February 8-9 during the Class B-2 District Tournament. From Grand Island Northwest HS, WHS will join Adams Central, Ashland-Greenwood, Central City, Columbus Scotus, Mount Michael Benedictine, Norris, Northwest, O’Neill, Omaha Gross Catholic, Schuyler and York.

 

Highlights for Wayne saw Reece Jaqua (120), Juan Vergara (138) and Reid Korth (160) finish second as Dakota Spann (170) placed fourth.

Crofton-Bloomfield: Jared Janssen (220) and Hudson Barger (106) fourth.

Hartington Cedar Catholic: Turner Korth (145), Morgan Koch (160) and Eric Hoesing (182) first; Ethan Koch (152) second and Kerby Hochstein (126) third.

Pierce: Brett Tinker (170) and Ryder Fuchs (195) first; Carter Jensen (126), Brock Bolling (106) and Isaiah Adams (113) second; Devin Graae (113), Jeremiah Kruntorad (132), Nelson Emerson (160) and Dylan Kuhler (220) third as Ethan Dohmen (120), Michael Kruntorad (138), Ashton Schweitzer (145) and Cole Cheney (182) fourth.
