Bases Loaded Walk Gives Wayne State Sweep Over Minnesota Duluth

WAYNE – For the fifth time in three days, the Wayne State College baseball team was in action on the home diamond.

Sunday afternoon featured a nine-inning ball game between WSC and Minnesota Duluth to close out the three-game series after the ‘Cats won both Saturday meetings.

From the Pete Chapman baseball complex, both teams were held scoreless the opening two innings. Then Minnesota Duluth and Wayne State scored a pair of third inning runs. After UMD regained the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, WSC answered with their own run in the home half. Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs walked in the winning run with the bases loaded for Wayne State College for the 4-3 victory.

The Wildcats improved to 14-7 (5-3 NSIC) winning their fifth straight while UMD dropped to 4-12 (2-6 NSIC).

Andrew Hanson posted three hits, two being doubles and drove in one run for WSC. Kyle Thompson added a pair of singles and RBI as Jake Lorenzini doubled. Alex Logelin singled while Bryce Bisenius accounted for a RBI.

Aaron Ras (2-1) worked the final inning and was credited with the win striking out three batters and walking one. Lawson Zenner started the opening five innings allowing three earned runs off nine hits while striking out five batters. Andrew Staebell worked three innings striking out two batters and walking one.

The Wayne State College baseball team will close out a seven-game home stand during a mid-week conference doubleheader on Wednesday, March 27. WSC will host University of Mary at noon and 3 p.m.
