Back-To-Back Wildcat Softball Road Splits, Chandler Surpasses 200 Hits

ABERDEEN, SD – Following a Friday split with MSU Moorhead, the Wayne State College softball team visited Northern State the day before Easter.

WSC took on the Wolves of NSU Saturday.

In the opening game, WSC got on the board with a four-run first inning. Northern State then tallied a six-run third before scoring a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to lead 11-4. NSU put the game away in the sixth by outscoring the ‘Cats 2-1 and won 13-5 in six innings.

Emily Chandler recorded her 200th career hit with the ‘Cats posting a single, double and RBI while Ashley Hernandez singled and added a two-run homer. Taylor Menard and Kamryn Sparks both singled as Abbie Hix and Michaela Smith both accounted for a RBI.

Makenna Adkison (6-13) suffered the complete game loss in five and two-thirds allowing 13 runs (11 earned) off 19 hits while walking four batters and hitting two.

From the second contest, Northern State was first to score in the opening inning with a run. Following three scoreless innings, WSC then poured in seven runs during the fifth to go along with a two-run seventh to win 9-1. With another split, WSC is now 12-29 (3-21 NSIC) while Northern State sits 18-28 (10-14 NSIC).

Menard led the ‘Cats at the plate with four singles and two RBI while Chandler, who became just the seventh player in school history to reach the 200-hit mark, tacked on a two-run homer, two singles and four RBI. Sparks also recorded a two-run homer and a single. Morgan Vasa, Kortney Buresh and Hix all singled.

Riley Vanderveen (3-6) picked up the complete game win in seven innings allowing an earned run off eight hits while walking one batter.

The Wayne State College softball team will next be in action on Wednesday, April 24 hosting #7 Winona State at 1/3 p.m.
