Augustana Women Use 43-29 First Half Advantage Over WSC

WAYNE – Week eight of the NSIC regular season began Friday night for the Wayne State College women’s basketball team welcoming in the top South Division team.

From Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College, WSC hosted Augustana University

After taking a 14-point lead into the locker room, Augustana put on the cruise control to win 87-73. The Vikings improved to 10-4 (9-3) while the ‘Cats fell to 6-9 (5-8).

Augie led 19-17 after the opening quarter before doubling up WSC, 24-12 in the second quarter. The Vikings took a 43-29 lead at the half. The ‘Cats scored 22 points in each of the third and fourth quarter while Augustana poured in 20 and 24 respectively.

Four Wildcats recorded double figures led by senior Erin Norling with 17 points (6-15 FG/3-9 3PT/2-4 FT) and five assists. Junior Kylie Hammer (4-10 FG/3-5 3PT) and sophomore Josey Ryan (5-10 FG/1-3 3PT) both finished with 11 points while senior Brittany Bongartz (5-8 FG) added 10 points.

Other Wildcat scoring came from senior Halley Busse and junior Autumn Mlinar with six points, sophomore Lauren Zacharias tallied five points, freshmen Ella Skinner and Aaliyah McMillan both scored three points and sophomore Ashley Gustavson scored a point. Mlinar and Ryan both grabbed a team-high five boards to go long with four steals for Ryan and three by Hammer.

WSC shot 27-61 (44.3%) from the field, 11-24 (45.8%) from the three-point line and 8-12 (66.7%) from the foul line.

Augie leaders were Izzy Van Veldhuizen with 16 points, Hannah Mitby with 15 points, Lauren Sees and Janelle Shiffler both finisehd with 13 points as Vishe’ Rabb added 10 points.

The Vikings finished 32-60 (53.3%) from the field,  10-19 (52.6%) from behind the arc and 13-16 (81.3%) at the charity stripe.
