Arlington Girls, Wayne Boys Take Advantage In Second Quarter

WAYNE – The final doubleheader basketball games of the season for Wayne High closed out the week Friday evening

From the Wayne Jr/Sr high school gymnasium, the Blue Devils welcomed in Arlington.

During the girls game, Arlington outscored Wayne in the second quarter 13-2 to hold on for the 37-34 win. The Eagles improve to 14-10 while Wayne High fell to 5-17.

Wayne led 13-11 after the first quarter before Arlington took a 24-15 lead into the half. Wayne chipped away at the deficit with an 8-7 third and 11-6 in the fourth.

Frankie Klausen paced Wayne High in scoring with 13 points while Brooklyn Kruse added eight points and four rebounds. Mikaela McManigal and Rubie Klausen (four boards) both scored four points, Mia Nelsen tallied three points and Emily Longe scored two points.

Arlington leaders were Kailynn Gubbels with 11 points as Kate Miller followed by 10 points.

 

In the boys contest, Wayne High took control of the second thanks to a 17-2 quarter and won 51-39. WHS won their eighth straight to improve to 17-6 while the Eagles fell to 7-15.

Arlington used a 13-9 first quarter to go up before WHS led 26-15 at the break. Wayne High outscored the Eagles 15-11 in the third while Arlington won the fourth 13-10.

Three Blue Devils recorded double figures with Shea Sweetland scoring 17 points. Tyrus Eischeid added 14 points and 11 rebounds as Tanner Walling poured in 11 points.

Other WHS scoring came from Josh Lutt with five points as Noah Lutt and Cody Rogers both scored two points.

Aiden Foreman paced Arlington with 19 points and nine rebounds while Dustin Kirk tallied eight points.

The Wayne High girls will next face Norfolk Catholic (#4 vs. #1) in the Class C1-7 subdistrict tournament hosted by Norfolk High on Tuesday, February 18 at 6 p.m. Pregame coverage on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com is set for 5:45 p.m.

The Blue Devil boys will next close out their season hosting Pierce on Friday, February 21 at 7:45 p.m. for parent’s night. The game will be carried on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com with the pregame show set for 7:30 p.m.
