Area Senior Legion Weekend Scores, Wayne & Wakefield Look To Fight Off Monday Night Elimination

WAYNE – Elimination games narrowed Senior Area American Legion baseball tournaments into Monday competition.

From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, #2 Wayne competed against #1 Columbus Lakeview Sunday late afternoon.

Both teams finished with three errors as the big inning came in the third favoring Lakeview where they scored seven of their nine runs to win 9-3. Columbus Lakeview avenged a loss to Wayne earlier this season of 5-4 in eight innings in the Ralph Bishop League Tournament consolation game on July 3.

Lakeview took the early 2-1 lead after the first and then outscored Post 43, 7-1 in the third to lead 9-2. Wayne added one more run in the top of the fourth but fell 9-3. Wayne is now 14-5 on the season.

Reid Korth singled and drove in two runs while both Jacob Kneifl and Justin Sherman singled and scored. James Dorcey and Brock Hopkins provided singles as Wyatt Heikes also scored.

James Dorcey (99 pitches) suffered the loss in four and a third innings allowing nine runs (three earned) off seven hits while striking out one batter and walking three. Heikes (29 pitches) worked an inning and a third allowing one hit while striking out one batter and walking two. Aiden Liston (18 pitches) came in for the final out allowing one hit while striking out and walking one batter each.

#1 Lakeview defeated #4 O’Neill, 27-2 on Saturday as #3 Pierce eliminated #5 Stanton, 27-0 earlier Saturday afternoon and then defeated O’Neill, 9-7 Sunday afternoon.

Monday’s lone game will feature an elimination contest between #2 Wayne and #3 Pierce at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to Tuesday’s championship game at 4 p.m. against undefeated #1 Columbus Lakeview. Wayne edged Pierce, 5-4 in eight innings on Friday evening as this will mark the fourth meeting between the two Senior programs with Pierce winning 8-4 in the Ralph Bishop League Tournament semifinal on July 2 and Wayne winning 11-3 during the regular season meeting on June 2.


Class B Area 3 Tourney from West Point weekend results:

On Saturday, #6 Fort Calhoun eliminated #7 Blair, 9-7; #4 Arlington defeated #1 West Point, 10-2 and #3 Waterloo-Valley defeated #2 ETC Knights, 10-0. Sunday: #5 Albion eliminated ETC Knights, 6-1; Arlington defeated Waterloo-Valley, 11-3 and Fort Calhoun eliminated the host West Point, 3-2. Teams remaining include Fort Calhoun, Waterloo-Valley, Albion and undefeated Arlington. (Bracket was unavailable this morning on legion website).



Also, the Wakefield Post 81 Seniors competed in elimination games over the weekend during the Class C Area 2 Legion Tournament.

Saturday scores saw #2 Wakefield defeat #6 Wisner-Pilger/Dodge-Howells, 6-0. Undefeated #1 Pender eliminated the host Hooper-Scribner, 14-4 while #5 Tekamah-Herman defeated #4 North Bend/Morse Bluff, 12-4.

Sunday action began with an elimination game where Wakefield topped North Bend/Morse Bluff, 12-1 while Pender advanced in the winner’s bracket by defeating Tekamah-Herman, 9-0. #1 Pender will advance to Tuesday’s championship game at 5:30 p.m. awaiting the winner of either #2 Wakefield or #5 Tekamah-Herman who play this evening at 7 p.m. Tekamah-Herman defeated Wakefield, 12-5 on Friday.


Class C Area 1 Tourney from Crofton weekend results:

Saturday scores: #2 Battle Creek eliminated #6 Hartington, 8-0; #1 Creighton eliminated #3 Neligh, 13-5 and #5 Crofton topped #4 Ponca, 6-4 in eight innings. Sunday scores: Battle Creek eliminated Ponca, 17-5 as Crofton defeated Creighton, 13-5. Monday schedule: #2 Battle Creek vs. #1 Creighton at 7 p.m. with the winner to face undefeated and host #5 Crofton at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
