GERING/SYRACUSE – Champions were crowned for Nebraska American Legion baseball teams Wednesday.
Starting in Gering, the Class B Senior American Legion tourney concluded with a pair of games. First, Bennington eliminated the defending champions, Springfield (9-5). Then, in the championship game Bennington beat Alliance again (9-8) thanks to a run in the top of the seventh. Bennington topped Alliance also Tuesday.
This marked Bennington’s first Class B Senior Legion championship and just second finals appearance (2016). Bennington also won the Class C title in 2004.
From Syracuse, the Class C Senior American Legion champion went to DCB (Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus) who topped Pender again (4-1) after getting up 2-0 in the first inning. DCB won 3-2 on Monday. Pender finished runner-up for the second consecutive year and fourth time in the past nine years.
This marked the first Class C Senior Legion title for DCB who made their third appearance in the championship game (2004/1995)
Back to the Class A Junior American Legion state tournament in Lincoln:
Lincoln Southwest defeated Millard West (3-2/nine innings) before Millard North won over LSW (7-4). The win marked the first Class A Junior Legion championship since 1998 for Millard North.
Class A Senior National Division from Kearney:
Kearney topped Millard West (4-3/eight innings) then Gretna won over Kearney (5-1)
Class A Sr. American Division from Creighton Prep:
Millard South defeated Elkhorn South (6-5) before Fremont won against Millard South (8-2)
Gretna and Fremont will meet to decide the Class A Senior Legion State Championship team. Fremont defeated Gretna twice in the A6 Area tournament hosted by Columbus on July 23 (5-3) and July 24 (6-0).
The Class A Division playoff will be held on Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3 while the Class A region is scheduled for Wednesday, August 7.
