Adams Central Builds 21-Point First Half Lead, Blue Devils Fall On Road

HASTINGS – A pair of Class C1 semifinalists from a year ago met in the opening round of this year’s football playoff during an 8/9 showdown.

From Adams Central High School in Hastings, the eighth-seeded Patriots welcomed in #9 Wayne High Friday night.

The Patriots scored on three straight possessions in the opening half and held off WHS to win on their home field, 31-13. Adams Centrals improved to 8-2 while Wayne High fell to 6-4.

Senior Cam Foster connected with senior Tyler Slectha on a 16-yard strike (5:26 1Q) and junior Breck Samuelson from 36-yards out (8:47 2Q) in the opening half. Sophomore tailback Hyatt Collins also ran in from a yard out with 34 seconds left in the second. Adams Central led 21-0 at the break.

WHS had a three-and-out punt on their opening drive and turned the ball over on downs twice in the first half.

Senior Victor Kniesche blocked a Patriot punt early in the third quarter but Wayne High tuned the ball over on downs shortly after.

Following a Wayne defensive stop, junior Tanner Walling then placed the ball perfectly for senior Reese Jaqua which led to a two-yard rushing touchdown from senior Reid Korth. The PAT was missed with 1:37 left in the third.

Adams Central then took the ensuing kickoff inside the Wayne 15. Slectha kicked through a 29-yard field goal three seconds into the fourth and later scored on a 74-yard pass from Foster with 7:35 left in the game.

Wayne High ended the game when Walling found Jaqua from 12-yards out. Junior Yair Alcantara then made the extra-point.

Final, again favored Adams Central 31-13.
