WAYNE – Three members of the Wayne State College indoor track & field team have qualified for Indoor Nationals scheduled for next weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.
According to a release from the Wayne State Athletics office, Wildcat male throwers are junior Cade Kalkowski and senior Dylan Kaup while sophomore Mckenzie Scheil will represent the women’s program.
The 2020 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 13-14.
Kalkowski is from Niobrara (Niobrara HS) and has qualified for the indoor national weight throw event for a second straight season. His season-best mark came last weekend at 67’ 3 ¼” during the NSIC Indoor Championships in Mankato to place second and earn All-NSIC honors. He ranks sixth in NCAA Division II entering the national championships and will compete in the weight throw on Friday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. Last season, Kalkowski earned All-American honors in the event with a seventh-place finish (66’ 7 ¾”) at Pittsburg, Kansas.
Kaup is from Neligh (Neligh-Oakdale HS) and is a repeat national qualifier in the weight throw after posting a top throw of 64’ 1” this season at the SDSU Last Chance Meet on February 21. His mark ranks 14th best in NCAA Division II entering the national championships and Kaup will compete in the weight throw on Friday, March 13 at 1:30 p.m. Last year, Kaup was 18th in the weight throw at nationals with a top mark of 60’ 8 ½”.
The Fairmont-native (Fillmore Central HS), Scheil captured the NSIC weight throw title last weekend in Mankato, Minnesota with a season-best mark of 63’ 0”. She currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division II entering the indoor nationals. Last season as a redshirt freshman, Scheil qualified in the weight throw for the indoor nationals and took 15th place with a top mark of 58’ 6”.
Scheil will compete on Friday, March 13 at 4:30 p.m. at the national championships.
