#8 Northern State Ends Season For #7 Wayne State In Conference Tourney

SIOUX FALLS, SD – After surviving elimination in the afternoon, the #7-seed Wayne State College had one more game to fight off before advancing to the third day.

Back in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for their third game in two days, WSC competed with #8 Northern State who lost earlier that afternoon to #5 Concordia-St. Paul (5-4). WSC defeated #6 Winona State 9-7.

Northern State opened with a 4-2 lead and never allowed WSC back into the game. The Wolves tacked on a run in the third and five more in the fourth while the ‘Cats answered with a run in the fifth to trail 10-3. NSU produced a two-run sixth as Wayne State College scored three in the eighth but it wasn’t enough and fell 12-6. Northern State improves to 22-19 overall while Wayne State ends their season at 21-26.

Five Wildcats recorded two hits each as senior Tanner Simons and junior Travis Miller each singled, doubled and drove in a run. Freshman Alex Logelin and junior Kyle Thompson singled twice as senior Rob Ramsey singled twice and drove in a run. Freshman Andrew Hanson also tripled.

WSC used five pitchers in the defeat, as sophomore starter Aidan Breedlove suffered the loss (2-6) in three and two-thirds allowing nine runs (seven earned) off of nine hits while striking out three batters and walking two. Sophomore Isaac Rubendall worked two and a third innings allowing three earned runs off of three hits while striking out three batters and walking four. Seniors Brady Johnson, Spencer Johnson and Adam Poldberg all pitched an inning.

In the winner’s bracket #2 Augustana will face #5 Concordia-St. Paul at Noon today followed by an elimination game between #1 Minot State in a rematch vs. #8 Northern State. NSU defeated the Beavers on Wednesday (11-6).
