#6 Ansley-Litchfield Holds Off Aggressive #3 GACC Comeback

LINCOLN – GACC was down 15-2 after the 1st Quarter, but would eventually tie the game in the 4th Quarter, before a thrilling finish.

It was all Spartans in the 1st Quarter, leading 15 to 2 going into the last 8 minutes of the half.

Gaurdian Angels, not wanting to let the game slip away, made some nice plays down the stretch. Several scorers got on the board, including Marissa Hunke, Allyh Plague, Brandi Doernemann, and Lexis Haase.

Spartans Head Coach Joel Bailey says, “They got a little happy in the locker room, and their moms and dads are behind them. Clapping and cheering for them. And then the 3rd Quarter started and they realized hey the other team can play too. So we kind of had to collect our selves, get our composure back and realize this is a 4 quarter game. We’re going to have to play the whole thing.”

Spartans lead 30-16 at halftime, but the Bluejays made a serious run in the 3rd quarter with 17 points, to AL’s 7, pushing the score to 37-33 before the final quarter.

The Blue Jays at one point tied the game 41-41 in the fourth, but the Spartans pulled out whatever was left in the tank to hold on. Some late free throws and multiple offense rebounds on free throw misses in the final 30 seconds sealed this one away. The Spartans won 49-43.

Bluejays Coach Jerry Stracke says even though the season didn’t end how they wanted, there was a lot of reasons for this team to hold their heads high.

“We had to overcome a lot of adversity. You know we lost two players to [torn] ACLs, two starters. The a lot of sickness, and only returning one player that had any playing experience. So I thought they’ve come a long ways, and I couldn’t be more happy or proud of this group,” says Stracke.

The Spartans advance to 21-3 and play BDS at 10:45 a.m. on Friday at Devaney.

The Bluejays drop to 20-7 on the year.
