ABERDEEN – With the Wildcat men hosting Northern State, that put the Wayne State College women on the road at NSU.
From Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, South Dakota, WSC visited the Wolves Saturday.
Only two players accounted for Wayne State’s first half scoring as Northern State jumped ahead early and never allowed WSC back into the game. The Wolves won game one, 77-53 improving to 1-0 while Wayne State College fell to 0-1.
Northern State led 19-8 after the first and added to their lead thanks to a 21-5 second quarter. NSU led 40-13 at the break. WSC then started to mount a comeback in the second half with a 20-13 third quarter before Northern State University outscored WSC, 24-20 in the fourth to win 77-53.
Senior Brittany Bongartz paced WSC in scoring with 15 points and had eight rebounds while senior Erin Norling added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals. Sophomore Josey Ryan had seven points, senior Halley Busse added six points as junior Autumn Mlinar didn’t score rounding out the starting five.
Off the bench, the ‘Cats were led by junior Kylie Hammer with six points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals; sophomore Ashley Gustavson had three points and sophomore Awoti Akoi tallied two points.
WSC shot 17-62 (49.2%) from the field, 3-26 (11.5%) from behind the arc and 16-24 (66.7%) from the foul line.
A pair of Northern State players scored double figures led by Lexi Wadsworth with 21 points and nine rebounds while Kailee Oliverson tallied 17 points and nine boards.
NSU finished 29-59 (49.2%) from the floor, 7-13 (53.8%) from the three-point line and 12-15 (80%) at the charity stripe.
