Blue Devil Girls Bowling Team Wins Millard Invite, Boys Place Fifth

OMAHA – A first-year program closed out their pre-holiday schedule ahead of the five-day moratorium beginning Wednesday.

From Maplewood Lanes in Omaha, the Wayne High bowling teams were on the road competing at the Milliard Invite on Monday.

The Blue Devil girls won a very tough Millard North Invite. WHS defeated Lincoln Pius X twice, the host Millard North and Seward twice. WHS battled back down 0-2 against Seward and won three straight to win 3-2.

The Wayne Lady Blue Devils got out of the gates hot and after the first three games of pool play would find themselves with the first seed. The Lady Blue Devils first went up against Lincoln Pius X winning the match 796-563. Leading the way for Wayne was Jamie Janke with a 200 followed by Brianna Nissen (168), Andi Belt (154), Natalie Bentjen (146) and Jersi Jensen (128).

Game 2 put Wayne against the host team Millard North. Wayne again started hot and never let off the gas. The Lady Blue Devils defeated Millard North 824-568. Leading the Lady Blue Devils in game 2 was Jamie Janke with a 214 followed by Natalie Bentjen/Riley Haschke (169), Brianna Nissen (151), Jersi Jensen (149) and Andi Belt (140).

Game 3 would find Wayne shooting their best score of the season. Wayne defeated Seward 870-625 to take game 3. Leading the way for the Blue Devils was Natalie Bentjen (214) followed by Andi Belt (210), Jamie Janke (179), Jersi Jensen/Catherine Rutenbeck (138) and Brianna Nissen (129).

The 3-game team pin total of 2490 was Wayne’s best of the season. After the pool play tournament the Lady Blue Devils won a total of 23 of the 24 possible match play points. In the semifinals of the Baker tournament Wayne found themselves against Lincoln Pius  X. Wayne would defeat Lincoln Pius 3-0 in the semifinals to put themselves in the finals against the #2 team Seward. Seward got off to a hot start in the Baker finals to take games 1 and 2 by scores of 175-179 and 151-158. Wayne would have to win the last 3 games if they were to get the tournament championship. In game 3 Wayne battled Seward back and forth and finished the game with a 152-126 victory. Game 4 found the Lady Blue Devils continue their hot play winning a high scoring match 184-162.

This left it all to a winner take all game 5. Both teams battled back and forth and in the end Wayne came out on top 149-118. The Blue Devils ended up with their 2nd Invite win of the season and improved their overall record to 12-0 for the season. Leading the way for Wayne individually for the day was Jamie Janke with a 594 and a 3rd place finish. Other top ten finishers for Wayne were Natalie Bentjen with a 529 (5th), Andi Belt with a 504 (6th) and Brianna Nissen with a 448 (7th).

For the Wayne Boys, they battled against top competition. The team bowled their best three-score series of the season and got seeded fifth. WHS suffered a loss to the host Millard North in the Baker match.

Wayne started the day well but ran up against an extremely tough Lincoln Pius X team. Wayne would battle hard back and forth but lose the first game of the morning 972-844. Leading the way for Wayne in game one was Brogan Foote with 242 followed by Tanner Sievers (178), Peyton Riesberg (161), James Dorcey/Koby Nelson (132) and Shayne Giedner (131).

Game two found Wayne again on the losing end to Millard North with team scores of 843-779. Leading the way for Wayne against Millard North was Tanner Sievers with a 179 followed by Peyton Riesberg (177), Brogan Foote (164), Koby Nelson (156) and Shayne Geidner/James Dorcey (103).

The final game of pool play put Wayne against Seward. Wayne went on to shoot their best game of the year thus far with a 915 but found themselves on the losing again once more. Seward won match 3, 949-915. Brogan Foote again paced the Blue Devils with a 242 followed by James Dorcey (214), Peyton Riesberg (170), Tanner Sievers (153) and Koby Nelson/Sean Aschoff (136).

Wayne’s 3-game team pin total of 2538 was the best of the year for the Blue Devils and put them in 5th place after the pool play portion of the tournament. Wayne would face Millard North in the Baker portion of the first round of the tournament. Millard North would defeat Wayne 3-0 to take the match. Brogan Foote ended the day 3rd overall individually shooting a season high 648.

The Blue Devil bowling teams will be back at Wildcat Lanes in Wayne on Thursday, January 7 hosting Norfolk.
