Wildcat Pitchers Control Collegiate Summer Baseball Game From The Mound

OMAHA – Although their season was cut short, four Wayne State College Wildcat baseball players put in the work Friday on the hill to combine for a two-hit shutout.

With summer baseball being allowed to open competition in the state of Nebraska this past Thursday, several teams in the Corn Belt Collegiate Baseball League began their Summer of 2020 schedule.

Cade Herman, Grant Carl, Ryan Petersen and Andrew Staebell all saw time pitching for the Omaha Bombers on Friday, June 19 against the Omaha Black Sox. The Bombers topped the Black Sox 8-0 thanks to a run in the first, three more in the second and four in the sixth.

Herman started the opening three innings allowing just one hit while striking out three batters and walking two followed by Carl who also gave up just one hit while striking out and walking one batter each. Petersen worked an inning and a third striking out a pair of batters and walking one while Staebell closed out the final two-thirds striking out one batter.

Other Wildcats seeing time at the plate came from Nate Sailors (shortstop) who recorded a RBI, walked and struck out; Hunter Babe (catcher) scored one and struck out twice as Garett Svoboda (OF) had a pair of walks and struck out. Josh Renken is another Wildcat pitcher that is listed on the Omaha Bombers team.

Travis Baily, a Wildcat outfielder, was on the opposing team of the Omaha Black Sox on June 19. He walked once and was left on base twice.

Another Wildcat baseball player who is listed on a team playing in the Corn Belt League include Michael Ripa (Omaha Rail Riders). He redshirted his 2020 season after transferring from Northeast Community College.

Saturday’s Corn Belt Summer League scheduled in Omaha will feature the Omaha Rail Riders vs. Omaha Royal Blue Dogs at 2 p.m.; Omaha Royal Blue Dogs vs. Omaha Red Raiders at 5 p.m. and Omaha Filthballers vs. Omaha Bombers at 8 p.m.
