WAYNE – With the latter half of January featuring a handful of road contest, the Wayne High girls and boys were at home Tuesday night.
From the Wayne Jr/Sr high school gymnasium, WHS hosted Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.
During the girls game, LCC took the early 11-5 first quarter lead before extending their lead thanks to a 13-12 second. At the break, the Bears led 24-17. Both teams then scored 15 points in the third and another 14 each in the fourth quarter where Laurel-Concord-Coleridge held on for the 53-46 victory. LCC improves to 7-6 while Wayne High dropped their eighth straight game to now sit 4-10 on the season.
Frankie Klausen paced Wayne High on the court with 21 points followed by Rubie Klausen with 10 points. Other scoring came from Brooklyn Kruse with nine points as Mikaela McManigal and Emily Longe both added three points.
Wayne High made seven three’s as a team (five from Frankie) and went 5-9 from the foul line.
LCC was led by Kinsey Hall with 20 points, while Makayla Forsberg added 12 points, Erica Wolfgram tallied nine points and Delaney Ehlers finished with eight points. Other scoring from the Bears came from Reggan Kuhlman and Haley Christensen both finishing with two points.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge made five three-point baskets and went 12-14 from the foul line (8-10 from Hall).
In the boys contest, Wayne outscored LCC 10-6 in each quarter during the first half to lead 20-12. In the second half, the Blue Devils started to pull away with an 11-7 third and 22-16 fourth. Final saw Wayne High win 53-35 to improve to 9-5 on the season securing their fifth consecutive victory. For LCC, they fall to 10-3 with two of their losses coming at the hands of WHS (50-59 L on December 31).
Two double figure scorers paced WHS on the court with Tyrus Eischeid scoring 16 points and Shea Sweetland following with 13 points. Trevor DeBoer added nine points, Cody Rogers poured in six points, Brandon Bartos tallied three points as Tanner Walling, Josh Lutt and Noah Lutt all scored two points.
Wayne High made three three-pointers and went 12-19 from the foul line (5-6 Eischeid).
Noah Schutte was the top LCC scorer with 15 points while Cale Hartung added nine points. Ty Erwin fouled out with six points, Evan Schmitt scored three points and Evan Haisch finished with two points.
The Bears hit four three-point shots and went 9-12 from the foul line (7-10 Schutte).
The Wayne High girls and boys will also host North Bend on Thursday, January 16. The Blue Devil girls will also host Norfolk Catholic while the WHS boys go on the road to Guardian Angels Central Catholic on Friday before both teams end the month on the road.
