GACC Girls Pull Away From Wayne Monday Night

WAYNE – Over the next five days, the Wayne High girls and boys basketball teams will play two games each on separate days as the Blue Devil girls played their first 2020 game Monday.

From the Wayne Jr/Sr high school gymnasium, WHS hosted Guardian Angels Central Catholic. The Wayne boys will face GACC on Friday, January 17 in West Point.

Wayne kept the game close early down 17-12 in the first quarter and trailed at most by 13 points in the second quarter. GACC added to their lead with a 17-11 second to go up 34-23 at the break. The Bluejays then started to pull away outscoring the Blue Devils 14-9 in the third and 8-4 in the fourth. Final saw Guardian Angels Central Catholic win 56-36 to improve to 9-2 as WHS fell to 4-7, dropping their fifth straight.

Wayne High was led by Frankie Klausen and Emily Longe both scoring 11 points. Four-point scorers came from Rubie Klausen and Brooklyn Kruse as Mia Nelsen, Peyton French and Mikaela McManigal all scored two points.

The Bluejays were paced by the 16 points from Brenna Rief in first half while Sophia Hass scored six of her 11 points in the second half. Marissa Hunke poured in nine points followed by Kate Gnad with seven points. Other Bluejay scoring came from Brandi Doernemann and Kassidy Kaup with four points, Livia Hunke tallied three points and Erica Engelmeyer tacked on two points.

GACC finished 8-11 from the charity stripe.

The Wayne High girls will next visit Pierce on Friday, January 10 at 7:45 p.m. Justin Raulston will have the call of WHS girls action on Big Red Country ‘KTCH’ 104.9 and waynedailynews.com with pregame coverage set for 7:30 p.m.

The Wayne High boys (5-5) will play their first games of 2020 on Tuesday, January 7 hosting Boys Town (4-3). Junior Varsity action will open the night at 5:15 p.m. followed by varsity competition around 7 p.m.
