Wayne Travel Teams Open Pool Play In Wakefield With Wins

WAKEFIELD – Results from two of the Wayne youth baseball teams were posted from the 33rd annual Lefty Olson Mid Summer Classic.

In Wakefield, the Wayne didget, bronco and pony teams were all in action.

Moving into the bronco division, Wayne took the early 2-0 lead before both teams scored a run in the second. Wayne extended their lead in the third with three runs and outscored Norfolk Steel 3-1 in the fifth to win 9-2 and improve to 11-1.

Gavin Redden singled twice, tripled and drove in two runs while Devin Anderson singled twice and drove in two runs for Wayne. Alex Frank singled, tripled and drove in a run; Kaleb Moormeier singled and doubled; Calvin Ankeny doubled; Kaden Keller and Jase Dean both singled and drove in a run as Alex Rodriguez singled.

Moormeier picked up the win in four innings allowing one run off one hit while striking out three batters. Keller worked the final two innings allowing a run off one hit while striking out and walking two batters each.

The Wayne broncos will close out pool play at 2 p.m. against Ashland Saturday.

 

In the pony division, Wayne won a high-scoring contest against Laurel, 12-11.

Aiden Liston went 4-for-4 at the plate while Cooper Zara singled and doubled for Wayne. James Dorcey singled twice as Dom Dominguez, Wyatt Heikes and Ryan Karsky all added a single.

Yair Alcantara started the opening four innings allowing 10 runs off six hits while striking out five batters and walking five. Calvin Starzl then closed the game out in two innings allowing one run off one hit while striking out four batters and walking two.

The Wayne ponies will next face Oakland this morning at 9 a.m. in pool play.

 

The Wayne didgets will play their second pool play game this morning against Ashland at 11 a.m.
