DENVER, CO – For the second straight weekend, the Wayne State College volleyball team took to the road for a non-conference tournament.
From the Regis University Fieldhouse in Denver, Colorado, #17 WSC began the Colorado Premier Tournament which features top 25 Division II competition.
The Wildcats started Friday afternoon with a win in straight sets over #5 Lewis (Ill) (25-20, 25-14, 25-23) to improve to 4-0 and are now 12-0 in sets played. Lewis fell to 4-1.
Kelsie Cada paced the Wildcats with 12 kills and five digs followed by Taya Beller with 10 kills. Rachel Walker finished with 34 set assists, six digs and two kills as Jessie Brandl recorded a team-high 13 digs. Maggie Brahmer added seven kills, Jazlin De Haan tabbed six kills and a dig, Elly Larson added three kills and a dig, Alaina Wolff tallied seven digs and Jordan McCormick had six digs.
Walker and McCormick both led the service ace category with three each, Cada had two and Brandl tacked on an ace. Walker also had two blocks (one solo), Beller and Larson both finished with solo blocks as Brahmer had a block.
WSC outhit Lewis, .306 to .225.
#17 Wayne State College will close out day one of the Colorado Premier Tournament with #9 (3-0) Western Washington at 3:30 p.m. before playing two more opponents on Saturday, September 11.
