MARSHALL, MN – Saturday afternoon showcased a pair of top 15 NCAA Division II Top 25 volleyball programs in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
From the PE Gym in Marshall, Minnesota, #11 Wayne State College visited #13 Southwest Minnesota State University.
After the ‘Cats won set one, Southwest Minnesota State won three straight to secure a four-set home victory (18-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-18). SMSU improved to 18-5 (11-4 NSIC) while WSC fell to 18-5 (10-5 NSIC).
Taya Beller paced WSC at the net with 11 kills and two digs, followed by Maggie Brahmer with nine kills and nine blocks as Kelsie Cada added seven kills, three blocks (one solo) and a team-high 14 digs.
Rachel Walker finished with 27 set assists, five digs, three kills and two blocks; Alaina Wolff tallied 12 digs; Jazlin DeHaan totaled five kills, four blocks (one solo) and five digs; Elly Larson had four kills, two blocks and a dig; Jordan McCormick tacked on four digs as Elly Larson (two blocks) and Brooke Peltz both had a dig.
Cada recorded three service aces as DeHann and Lauren Jacobsen both had an ace. Gabrielle Gergen also added a solo block.
The Mustangs outhit WSC, .226 to .145 as the Wildcats won the team block category with 12 compared to 10 from SMSU. But Southwest Minnesota State recorded 11 aces to five from Wayne Stat College.
