MADISON – With more ice to cover roads in northeast Nebraska Monday into Tuesday, a weekend crash was caused by icy roads in northeast Nebraska.
According to a release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement officers and rescue personnel responded to a two-vehicle accident on Saturday, January 23 at approximately 5:20 p.m.
Approximately two miles north of Madison on Highway 81, a south bound Chevy conversion van lost control on black ice. The van slid sideways into the center median and then into the north bound lanes. The van then overturned on to the passenger side and was struck by a north bound Chevy Colorado pickup. The driver of the pickup was transported to Faith Regional ER with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released.
The driver and front seat passenger of the van, who are residents of the Grand Island area, were pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained from the collision. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts but the passenger in the van was not.
Next of Kin has since been notified. Occupants of the Chevy Conversion van were Dario Garcia Tercero, 25 years old of Grand Island, NE (Deceased, driver) and Rosilio Renato De Pas, 26 years old of Grand Island, NE (Deceased, passenger). The driver of the Chevy Colorado was Tristan Bierman, 22 years old of Madison, NE.
Both vehicles are a total loss as drugs and alcohol are not considered to be a factor in the accident. Hwy 81 north bound lanes were closed for approximately four hours until crews were able to clear the lanes.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office was joined by the Nebraska State Patrol as well as Madison Fire and Rescue who responded to the scene.
