Weekend Ponca State Park Events

PONCA – Take time from your busy schedule this weekend to visit Ponca State Park for their weekend events.

According to a release, a trio of introduction courses are being featured.

On Friday, the pellet rifle course will last form 9 – 11 a.m. as youth must be eight years of age and older with adult supervision and cost is $1 per four clips. Saturday will highlight the shotgun for those 12 and older with adult supervision with cost being $7 for a box of 25 shells. Sunday’s lone scheduled activity will be the introduction to slingshot for those five years of age and up with adult supervision and cost is $1 for 30 rocks.

All equipment will be provided as guests can meet and pay at the Eric Wiebe Shooting Complex.

‘Oreo Moon Phases’ will take over Friday afternoon from 1 – 1:45 p.m. The moon doesn’t shine on it’s own, instead it reflects light from the sun. Attendees will learn about the different phases you see on Earth using Oreos. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Meet behind the center as cost is $2 per kit for this event.

Trivia night will take over Friday night at Ponca State Park starting at 6:30 p.m. Grab your friends and family for a fun night of nature-themed trivia. Prizes, $1 popcorn and memories will be created in the Sandbar/Willow Conference room for this free event.

Campfire cooking will be the Saturday afternoon featured event from 1 – 1:45 p.m. Attendees will learn fire safety and tools of the trade before cooking their very own snack. Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center from 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. before meeting at the west shelter at 1 p.m. Cost is $3 per kit.

Also, Critter Corner is scheduled to last from 3 – 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. Parkgoers can join a park naturalist to learn about Nebraska’s wildlife. Participants will get a chance to see furs, skulls, artifacts and more while hearing about how animals adapt to their environment. Meet in the display wing for this free event where you’ll even get to meet some resident critters.

Other events include a Forest Critter Hunt (Bloodroot Trail Self-guided Hike) to find the 10 hidden wildlife statues along the trail; Bingos/Scavenger Hunts/Passports; Search for Sasquatch; Ponca Packs; Old Oak Trail Self-guided Hike and Fishing Tackle Loaner Program.
